Continuous beep- oil tank smells gassy. Can gas “back up” into oil reservoir ?

I suppose it can, but it would take a lot of blow by, a lot. Like hole in piston amounts. You talking about the tank in the boat or on the side of the motor? In the boat is what I am referring to, this uses crank case pressure to push into the motor. So it's not really going backwards just jumping to the start. If it's on the side of the motor it could be the same but I am not sure.

oil tank is in the motor - oil pour is on top of motor. It’s suddenly full so - not good

Any word on what caused the oil tank to fill?

There is a check valve that can allow gas into the oil tank. But this would not trigger an alarm. Only alarm related to oil tank would be if it was low. You need to have a dealer hook it up to computer to see what is causing the alarm.

I had a old 1988 50 hp 2 stroke mercury that did the same thing. Oil tank was attached to the motor with the fill cap on top the cover. One day it started beeping low oil but there was oil the tank and smoke in the exhaust. Called a local merc dealer and they said that the oil float in the reservoir will get oil logged over time and sink to the bottom of the tank and cause the alarm. The only fix was to order a new oil reservoir or cut the wire for the alarm. They told me which color wire it was and I clipped it while I was on the phone with them. The beeping stopped and I never had any issues with it. I use always checked the oil level and made sure I topped it off. Good luck!
