Well, I only had off Thursday and Friday this year for deer season. Wife has been good to me all year so I decided to head the in-laws for Thanksgiving and get out all day Friday. Checked with my landowners on Wednesday night and they said no one else would be up in the woods on Friday. (I was able to hunt for an hour on Monday and Wednesday after work)

Headed home from the in-laws last night and I'm 20 mins from home when I plow a deer with the daughter's car. Gee, that's why nobody else wanted to drive home. At least 2 people in the car said they "knew we were gonna hit a deer". It was driveable so we finally get home. No, didn't keep the deer, she was hit pretty good.

So, I get up this morning and head out to the woods to find 2 cars parked on my hunting land. NICE! They are people that are allowed to hunt the property but they weren't supposed to be there. I tried around a couple of other spots I hunt and find all my buddies are already out. Soooo, I head back home and here I sit.

Same damn thing happened about 4 years ago at some land I used to hunt. Check with the landowners repeatedly and I'm the only one who's gonna be out there. So, I get the stands set etc, and the night before season the landowner says that his son and buddies will be up there. I head out the next morning to find they are set up about 50 yards either side of me. That lasted until 9.

Almost gave up gun hunting last time. Seriously thinking about it again after going through all the trouble and then hitting a deer on the way home, with the sole intent of coming home to hunt again. As much as I love deer season, it's such a complete pain in the a$$ sometimes.

I'll be out at another stand this afternoon.

Hope your seasons going better than mine.

Theedz, I am out of places to hunt. I hunted every weekend as a kid growing up. We even had a trap line that me and my brother would check before and after school. My spots are now developed, in city limits, someone with better connections made it exclusive or just plain backstabbed out of. Public land in my area ia a free for all, I am surprised there are not alot of hunter casualties.

I have a humble suggestion.....

I'm ignorant of WI seasons, but if they are like MI...

next year, plan to hunt during the second week of season. And, if possible, and if needed, go back for muzzleloader season. First, you won't compete with time off with co-workers that way. Second, most of the first week is characterized by tons of excited, smelly, noisy hunters who don't really know what they are doing. But he older deer know what's going on and they easily avoid the bozos, even with the rut. Most of those bozos are done within the first week of season, no matter what. Second week is quiet again and the bigger deer start moving again.

This is exacty what I experienced at deer camp in the UP this year. During the first week there were 16 guys in camp and not a single buck, even a smaller one, was shot. Everybody complaining, again, of how the deer have all been shot off, ever the big does, etc. I was there with one older gent for the middle part of the second week and honest to goodness, big deer were running all over the place. But by the tracks in the snow, they were still avoiding the deer blinds that had been occupied for most of the previous week. Camp owner shot a big 6 point from the doorway of his cabin.

I sat on a 5 gal bucket between two trees, located in what I suspected was a funnel area between the camp and the established blinds. I found that deer moved through constantly, just ambling along, and I shot a small buck right between the eyes on the second afternoon.

Jeeze, did I have to say all that just to brag that I shot a buck between the eyes? Guess so.

Theedz,

I know how you feel. I haven't deer hunted for probably 5 years or more. Why? Because since I quit farming I have to compete with all the other hunters who don't have exclusive rights on decent hunting property. The prize just isn't worth the battle anymore. It's too dangerous and I hunted as much for the solitude as I did the chance of harvesting some venison. Fishing will have to do for the year now.

Sidenote-

Drove 35 mins to another spot just out of Portage. One of the owners had given permission for someone to bowhunt but I was the only one gun hunting there. Arrived to find a 2 pickups and several people doing a drive. Talked reasonable to one of the guys who said the other owner had given them permission. I hinted around to see if he'd offer to let me stand the other side of the field where no one was. He said "Guess you're too late." Drove straight home again. Sooo, all in all I drove about 1 1/2 hours and +/- 120 miles and never took my gun out of the case.

Gun is all oiled now and put away. Good thing I took up Coyote hunting or I'd probably never get any hunting out of my rifles again.

Is it hard water season yet?????

It sounds as if a good friend needs a couple of venison steaks (harvested by rifle, not the front bumper of a car)!
WE WILL HAVE TO GET TOGETHER TO MAKE A TRANSFER.
