Subject: How to paint a lure?

I have some lures in my box that need a facelift, some just need a little enhancement. The winter in WI is long and I am going to tackle painting them myself. They are all "modern" day lures, mostly wood, some plastics. I have all my valuable lures in a display case. I am looking for technics on painting, and the different types of templates used.

You can also try my site www.geocities.com/out2llunge You won't find any stencils yet, but there is lots of info on painting (and building).

I tried the Tacklemaking.com site and it was down. I have been to all of the other sites that people have sent in. They have opened a "big can of worms" for me. They have lots of good ideas along with lure characteristic.
Thanks!!!

on lurebuilding.nl there is a section about color patterns. I believe we have some 7 patterns with detailed pictures. More to come in the future.

MuskieBum,
As far as the stenciling, I am not sure, I have been looking for different ideas. The Tiger strips on the Firetiger pattern would be a good place to start for me. In one of the websites there was a good idea with using Aluminum foil and cutting out your pattern then wrapping it on the lure, then paint it. I would like to know how to stencil scales if you have any info or ideas.
Thanks,
Dan

Have you given thought to using an airbrush? With a little practice you can do basically anything without the use of stencils. For scales, go to a fabric store and get some veil type material, works great.

ED, you can get a lifetime supply of scale patterns at any fabric shop for just a few bucks. Lace patterns and fishnet is all it takes. I use an airbrush, but have had decent results right out of a can. As far as tiger stripes, I would just draw them on with a black permanent marker. You can buy blank stencil sheets at most craft stores and use a xacto knife to cut them out. It's a hassle, but you will only have to do it once. I coat all my baits with Crystal Sheen or FlexCoat high build.

Another way to make a stencil is to lay your bait on top of some thin card stock and trace the body shape of the lure. Once you have the body shape you like, draw your pattern.

Cut out the pattern with scissors and then tape the seams back together, easier and just asa accurate as using an x-acto. You'll also have a double sided template. Just let the paint dry thoroughly (on the template)before you use the template on the second side of the bait.

The nettin idea works great for scales. just use sometype of flexible "fishnet" that will bend perfectly with your lure, and make sure when you spray to give it a light! coat for the scales or it will run and that tends to ruin a good day.

second as far as stencils go; something that works great is to fold a piece of paper/foil in half and put the crease on your bottom screw eye of lure. then draw out your pattern with a pen. by folding it in half you have the same exact pattern for both sides of the lure and you don't have to worry about changing the contour of the template for the lure shape from one side to the other.

Hope that made sense, I think I confused myself

Topwater,
My experience is limited with airbrushing. Like you said with a bit of practice maybe I can accomplish scales. I was not sure how fine the airbrush can paint. I know there will be trail and error involved, with you guys I am going to eliminate some error (I hope).

RAZE1,
With this Crystal Sheen or FlexCoat high build how does it apply and where do you get it? How many coats? Do you use a slow moving lathe or slow turning rotisserie with the application?

Out2llunge,
Good tip, I am not sure what thin card stock is? I am assuming it is like thin cardboard or heavy paper? Or is it something special? I would think it would work as long as you can match the silhouette of the lure?

MuskieBum,
It makes sense to me, I had to read it a couple of times till I got the picture, Thanks!

Thin card stock is just as you said...thin paper or light cardboard.

BTW, you don't need to use an airbrush (even to create scales) although airbrushes create finer detail.

Go to a fabric store and buy some Thule (pronounced TOOL), it's like the liner material under wedding dresses that makes them fluffy or something like that. Another thing you could use is an old athletic shirt (like a hockey jersey) with the holes in it. It creates a larger scale pattern effect.

ED, Crystal Sheen is made by the same Co. that makes Envirotex-Lite wich is probably the most popular lure epoxy. http://www.eti-usa.com/. Flexcoat has been part of the rod building industry forever. You can usually find someone on Ebay selling it. They are both a two-part epoxy 50/50 mix.

I apply two coats with a paint brush and turn the bait. The second coat is applied after the first becomes tacky. There are alot of variables and temperature being one. Letting it cure up a bit will also change the viscosity, thus it will go on thicker. If you really want a purdy bait you can add some ultra-fine glitter at this time.

I turn my baits one at a time with an old windshield wiper motor that I rigged up with a pair of needle nose vise grips on the shaft. Speed can be controlled with a rheostat from any local heavy truck dealer.

I could go on and on, so if you need anymore insight, ask

I use a few different methods for paint lures.. one is a stick on template
that I make from blank cd lables.. your baits must be dry if you have base coats applied first.. the othe thing I use is scale screen.. I make small picture frame type.. frames from panneling then staple on the screen this way I can spray both sides at once and I don't have to hold the bait while I do it..the screen I use is a lace material the same as sold in supply stores..
I use thinned jig paint sprayed through a double action air brush..
I try to show a picture here

Trimmer,
Nice picture! I am sorry I don't understand how you make the frame so you are able to paint both sides. Could you explain the frame to me a little more. Or a picture of one would do?
Thanks,

esox-dan,
I think by the frame he might be talking about, one of those cross stitch hoops.Just put your neting in the hoop then place it on the lure, and spray them scales.

ok I reread it maybe not? but there is another Idea anyways

Take some scale netting or similar fabric and make sure it's a few inches longer than the bait is long and than the bait is tall/wide. Wrap the netting around the bait and use clothes pegs to hold the netting. Spray the scale pattern (lightly - too much paint ruins it), wait say 15 -30 seconds and remove the netting.

Ok.. the screen looks like this
http://www.kentuckyangling.com/images/screen.jpg
I make two of the screens I then clamp them around the bait with small but strong spring clamps.usually four or five depends on the shape of the bait.. doing it this way you have better control over the bait and the netting you are shooting through..this scaling method has a little learning curve but you will master it if your stay at it..
here are a few hand made hard baits..just so you can see the screen effect on a larger bait
http://www.kentuckyangling.com/images/screen1.jpg
the one bait is a bait I call "The Ripper" I make this bait all the way up to 8".. the other bait is a shallow water crank bait..this one is 6" but I make them to 7 3/4" my spinnerbaits run from 1/8 to 2 1/2 oz
hope this helps a little
