For those of you who run wire line trolling setups what rods do you like? I’ve watched the videos by Gregg Thomas but looking for more specifics on an appropriate rod. Would a standard downrigger glass rod work? Normally I run 8ft Chaos Heavy Custom X trolling rods but guessing this will be too stiff. Any insight on this topic or wire line trolling in general would be great.

Never trolled wire for Musky But I use it on Lake Erie for walleye. We troll standard cheap glass down rigger rods. Never had problems with guides or break offs at the tip. These are long line sets 300-350 feet back. Most charters run the same set up with no real problems. I hope this helps.

I usually use an old glass or composite med heavy 8 foot bucktail rod and install a twilly tip
The St Croix glass trolling rod with a twilly tip works nice but more money than you need to spend .
Set your drag a little lighter unless you troll with mono then set it quite a lot lighter

Watch your guides when trolling with wire. This year I'm going to try an Okuma 8.5 foot copper leadcore rod and a 7.5 foot striper rod both of these rods have stainless guides.
