Many baits come out of the package with just a regular eyelet.
I also know that many guys attach their baits to the leader by way of a split ring direct, opting not to use a snap of any kind.

I still use leaders with a snap. Has anyone added split rings to all of their eyelets? I've read on some crankbaits and jerkbaits, adding the split ring may improve action. Then attaching your snap to the split ring, that's attached to the bait eyelet.
Thoughts?

I would say it definitely improves the action on gliders. I find it unnecessary on bucktails and non-wtd topwater. I think it slightly improves cranks (at least when trolled).

Pros: makes it easier to use Stay-Lok snap, improves the action of some gliders and crankbaits (remember the old Rapala loop knot they used to have you tie before they went with the split ring?);
Cons: one more piece of hardware to fail in a fish fight.

im probably in the minority, but i take all the rings off an use a large duolock snap on my homemade leaders. i also use lighter line and dont crank the drag down.

Greetings,

I offer a word of caution: do not connect a split ring to a split ring. That is, do not use a split ring on the eye of the lure and then connect the lure to a leader featuring another split ring. Use a welded ring in between the two split rings.

It's very possible for the openings of two split rings to find one another, such that one split ring enters into the other split ring. If so, the split ring will eventually work its way around the other split ring and become disconnected. I've proved this to myself on a handful of occasions. Fortunately, it did not cost me a lure or fish, but easily could have.

Good fishing and tight lines!

I am convinced that split rings give jerk baits, crank, pull baits and most surface baits a better action. Try it on some of your lures and see how they perform. I am very much a student of lure action. I am convinced that erratic lure action, slight rolling or quivering action increases strikes. Could be I am all wet, but getting the most action out of a lure gives me confidence. After chasing these maniacal fish for a long time and proving every theory I ever had wrong, cloud cover and lure action are the only two I have left that seem to be relevant most times.

Keep the faith

I've been making HD snaps myself for about 30 years, and because they are so much larger and beefier, I pretty much have to use a split ring on everything except large loop through wire baits. There would be no way for me to know if there was any difference in the action of trolled lure with and without an eye split ring because I have pretty much only trolled with due to the HD snaps.

However, back in the day when I was a pretty much a pure caster, I was of the opinion that a split ring attachment at the eye would decrease the action of gliders/twitch baits. Either way, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what works best on an individual lure, or lure brand basis.

With that said; I've never had any split ring fail or become unattached at the eye, and I do not even bother to use heavy-duty split rings there either.

However, I think that Borntofish made an excellent point about a potential problem attaching 2 split rings together. Although I've never had them separate, I have witnessed the split rings begin to work free... this was with them attached to the belly hook on body baits.

Originally I started out doing this 2 ring deal just to change the wear pattern of the hook on the bait, and then noticed (or more accurately perceived) that a more free swinging hook would work better at keeping fish pinned. There's really no way really to know for sure, but it still makes perfect sense to me.

Getting back to the potential problem, I found that it was the type of the ring I was using, and simply changed the super HD ones to just regular HD... problem solved. 100% you want the rings to be absolutely tight without a gap, when I notice a gap develop (usually from an older ring that's been opened too wide) I replace it on the spot.

A really nice byproduct of the 2 ring research is that not only does it change the wear pattern, the more free swinging hook also really helps to decrease any future wear pattern because the hook is not hitting the exact same spot like it does with 1 ring.  If you decide to try it, just keep an eye on those rings early on...

Sorry for hoping in here late guys, but what size split rings are you using on front of baits? I have heard/read anywhere from size 5 to 7.

Do you guys use split rings on the leader instead of just a solid wire ring?

No Alex. A split ring mounted on a wire leader (for example) would easily work its way off the thin wire. A solid ring is the way to go after having mounted all your baits with #7 split rings (for example). You'd probably want a #4 or #5 solid ring on your leader. Then you'd have a combo that would be strong and durable enough to use even in salt water.

That seems to be the most ideal way to change out baits quickly and securely and it’s what I do when fishing for Bluefin and other saltwater fish.
