Posts: 22 | Has anyone been turned back at the Canadian border due to something on their record? Have you attempted to go through the rehabilitation and restitution process? I have sent my forms and money in months ago and have not heard anything as of yet. How long did it take for the process to be completed? Will I be able to ice fish this winter? Just curious and waiting anxiously!!! Please let me know your experiences.

Posts: 1189 Location: Bagley,MN 56621 | A guy that was in our July group to LOTW had his license checked and they found a DWI from a few years back. He had to pay $180 fine I think, but was able to come into Canada and fish. He wasn't driving going over either, he was a passenger. we all had nicknames that trip....he was then dubbed... Taliban Tim Jo and Roger, correct me if wrong, but think thats how it went down.

Posts: 22 | For some offenses you can pay at the border but for more serious offenses you need to do some hoop jumping. mk

Posts: 58 Location: Oak Island, MN | Mark, Not knowing what your offense was it's hard to comment, but I can tell you that I have a neighbor that has a more serious problem in his background than a DUI, and it took him a few years to resolve. I assume all cases and experiences are different, so I would go right to the horses mouth for this answer. Below are sone numbers that we have been giving out to help people get a straight answer. Posts: 3926 | I would have a very hard time convincing myself to pay Canada for an old offense in the USA that I've already dealt with. It might be different if I was caught unawares at the border. Why are they being so hard? Too many tourist dollars already?

Posts: 5874 | And what was your nickname, Gregger? hehehe I had heard they lightened up this year at the border. I don't know if anybody had a problem going across this August for the Sab Bay MF Outing. In 2001, they were really checking. We went up with 8 guys, and three of them had DUI's. One was too old, and didn't show up on the background check. The other two paid the $200 CN fine, and were allowed in. A DUI is a felony in Canada. If you have one in the States, it is considered as an immigration violation, thus the fine. There are(were) several ways of dealing with it, depending on how recent the conviction is. If less than 5 years, you can apply for a Govenors Pardon. That costs $200 CN. If older than 5 years, you can apply for a Rehab kit. That also costs, you guessed it, $200 CN. Not sure how long it takes to get the Pardon or Rehab completed.

Posts: 20281 Location: oswego, il | I got a letter from canada telling me that I should not consider going there. They called me butt ugly, said I would scare the fish and just plain be bad for tourism.

Posts: 10 Location: N.W Lower Michigan | Seems odd that a DUI is such a serious offense up there when you consider that fishin', hockey and drinkin' (not necessarily in that order) appear to be their national pastimes. LOL!! It's about time that our I&N people tighten up the requirememts for them entering the USA, what with the terrorism issue and all. It's been my experience that it's a lot easier to get into the states than into Canada. Their customs people can make real difficult sometimes. One time (before 9/11!!), they had one agent going through my truck, two in the camper, and one in the boat and I was just goin' fishin'!! I didn't even have any illegal live bait with me. That brings up another point. You can buy Canadian crawlers here but you can't take them back to their home in the dirt you buy them in. Oh well, I guess I'm not supposed to understand all these things that don't make sense anyway!!
