Great article about your Canada trip in the Lunge Log of this month's Muskie magazine. Awesome fish. I hope you both get another chance at big fish like that; all my best, m

Here it is without the photos. A link would take you to the members only section of the website and I don't know if you'd get in without the password and secret handshake.

Hulbert Brothers, Trip Of A Lifetime!
On September 23rd I got an email from Steve Hulbert of Indianapolis. He had attached pictures of 3 muskies. In these types of emails the pictures are in an attachment but also show up on the regular text of the email. I scrolled down to find big muskies. I mean big muskies, definite 40 pounders. Naturally as I always do for you, I got on the phone, and once again met a really neat member of this organization.
One thing that Steve Hulbert wanted to emphasize was that this trip of a lifetime was made very significant because he was with his brother Tom. If you have a brother, you understand what he is saying. The trip produced 26 muskies with a 43.5 inch average. However on the top end of the list was the following: 55 inch, 54.5 inch, 54 inch, 53 inch, 50 inch and three at 49 inches. In there best attempt with girth measurements, they feel 8 of them were over 30 pounds and 2 of them over 40 pounds. Actually the girth on Brother Tom's 54.5 put that one at 39.24 pounds. That is well within the 1% range that we feel this formula represents. So maybe it was a total of 3 forty pounders. In any case there were many huge muskies coming in the boat on a regular basis.
This was a trolling trip. They hired a guide. Steve was surprised the guide agreed that they could enter these muskies with us. Steve was very reluctant to give exact details of where they were fishing. This non-specified thing is a subject that has been bantered around the block for many years. In reality this is the official policy of Muskies, Inc. This trip was six short days from September 7 through the 12th. Wednesday of that week was the full moon. The area had experienced over 2 weeks of front after front of weather changes and very windy. On Sunday when they arrived the weather was nasty. Monday turned out to be a blue bird day and hardly any wind. This was the week, constant change in the weather.
Steve could not pin point a specific depth or structure that was the key as they were all over the board. They caught fish shallow, deep and all on crank baits. One exception, they caught a 53 inch trolling a spinner bait only one foot deep. This is very unique and a compliment to their guide. Why would this man have them troll a spinner one foot deep when they were having success with deep crank baits? Obviously it worked. Us fisherman always worry about spooking a muskie with the boat. This 53 inch observed the passing boat and still ate a trolled bait nearly on the surface. Steve was quick to point out that he and his brother are not trying to brag here, it is just that they had a trip of a lifetime and wanted to share its results.
Steve's 55 inch release is currently the leader for the International Lunker Of The Month in September. We realize we did not lay a whole bunch of details on you about this trip. That is the way a high percentage of Muskie people are. However he did share the results with us and some pictures. As a matter of fact I did not even pursue the names of these crank baits. Steve mentioned this guide had another client following them in the back door that everybody would recognize, I mean everybody. Oops end of story.

I went out grocery shopping today. I caught 16 steaks, 34 chickens, 2 turkeys and a sack of potatoes! I caught them by trolling with a cashier, and she asked me to not tell her patterns because of her efficient nature. But I will say this, THEY WERE ALL ON SALE! Not bragging, just wanted to share, that way you can learn so much about shopping. And no, don't ask, I'm not telling what store it was at!

Tomyv,

I love it!!!  Thanks for having some humor about it.

But I'm glad you got the low-down on some good grub.  Good idea keeping the GPS coordinates of the store to yourself, you wouldn't want a bunch of people up there clearing out this store and ruining it for you, would ya??

Thanks for the Kudos Mikie.  I'm really looking forward to hanging out with you this spring back down at the Cave.  Save a spot for me at least one day in the Gambler.
