Posts: 284 | I have been fishing for a few years and using some inadequate tackle the entire time. After hiring a guide last year and after using his high quality high end tackle I realize that I dont have to struggle throwing double 8's and 10's as much as I have with my old 6'6 rods paired with abu 6500 c3's. However, I don't have much to spend. I am wondering if this combo is worth it? https://www.muskyshop.com/rods-reels/abu-toro-s/shield-rod-combo-sav... Or should I continue to save my pennies and buy the $750 ST Croix LE Combo I know I want. I am taking my daughter to Andy Meyers this year so wanted to something to make it easier on her more specifically.

Have not used the rod but have two of the Revo Toro S reels and really like them. Smooth, easy casting reels.

Posts: 1279 | Based on what you have been using, I would go with this set up. Haven't used the rod, but I'm sure it's fine quality. I have a Toro S, and it is a fine reel. I think it is more important to have multiple decent set ups, for different applications, than one super high end one. Unless you just have extra money laying around, that you don't know what to do with.

Posts: 275 | At the price you can get a Revo Toro Beast at right now you can pair that with a TI rod and get two awesome set ups for the price of the one you're talking about. You'll get alot more bang for your buck, in my opinion, out of two set ups with different actions. Jaimy

Posts: 284 | This combo is $300. Where can I find a Revo Toro Beast for $180? TI rods are $120 as far as I can tell. But I agree if I could find your combo for less than this one I am in.

Posts: 157 Location: West Central WI | Matt, have you considered looking around locally for a good used rod and then upgrading the reel to a new Abu, Diawa, Tranx, etc? I'd be willing to bet there are people on this site who are in your area or reasonable driving distance who have what you need to outfit you or your daughter. A lot of guys have rods hanging in their basement or garage that they have retired because they've worked their way up to high end St Croix or other. The same goes for reels, but you would need to be careful because wear and tear isn't always visible. That's why you could find that good used rod and match with a new reel where you know what you're getting. As for your daughter, you should look at double 8's to make it easier if you're headed to Canada where you will fish long days. Mix those with good spinners, crank baits and topwaters so she doesn't get discouraged pulling 10's. I understand what you want, but we all have wants that few of us can afford, at least all at once. You have time to shop around and there are still good Muskie shows going on where you can get some deals. I started small and inexpensive and it took 20 years to build my inventory of quality muskie equipment, one piece at a time. You can do this!

Posts: 275 | I was making the comparison to the Legend Elite combo that you referred to for $750. I think that if money is an issue you'd be better off having two different options for the same price range as one expensive set up. I don't personally own a Revo Toro S but my brother and nephew are happy with theirs. I've also heard good things about the Shield rods but I don't own one. Jaimy

Posts: 284 | I have considered this, I check the buy sell trade on this site regularly, as well as craigslist and facebook market place. This is actually where I got the four rods that I currently have. I havent had much luck in finding a long xh heavy rod. I am pretty sure I am gonna pop on this deal based on not one person saying anything bad about it. If I get a 8' heavy and a 8'6 XH is that what I would want for throwing blades?

Posts: 275 | The Shield rod with the Revo Toro S seems like a solid choice at a good price. Give the MuskyShop a call and they will be able to help with which of the combos would suit you best for what you intend to throw with them...Great people working in there! Jaimy

Posts: 166 Location: Alexandria, MN | Another inexpensive thing you can do if you have not done so already is put a power handle on your Ambassador 6500. They're usually about $20 and you should notice quite an improvement vs. a stock handle when pulling bucktails as far as the fatigue factor. Might not substitute for an upgrade to a Toro S, but it will give you a better option as a 2nd reel should you decide to upgrade. Did this for my nephews when they were just starting out muskie fishing. Seemed to help them.

Posts: 157 Location: West Central WI | Matt, you're in a good place looking at 8' and 8'6" H and XH for throwing blades, although everybody has their own sweet spot on what works for them. Do you belong to Muskies, Inc? If so, check with your local chapter because I can almost guarantee someone there has gear for sale. If not, find out about where and when the closest chapter is to you and attend a meeting. Too bad you don't live near where I do. I have 7 rods I have retired or will be retiring this spring because I'm making my own muskie rods now. Have patience on Craigslist and Facebook market place. Can you place a "wanted" notice on those? If others are like me, They always have muskie gear they just don't use and are too lazy to try and sell. It just sits there waiting for a good home. I look at my retired rods and about 100 baits and think that "some day" I'll try and sell them. Good luck!

Posts: 1209 | That reel is what will make fishing easier! You can get a beast for 300$ anywhere and should be able to find a used on at the 180 mark. I only use st croix mojo rods and like them.

Posts: 114 | Just purchased a Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast 61 on ebay. Found both HS and regular for around $185 for your door. Here's an example from this morning: https://www.ebay.com/itm/ABU-GARCIA-REVO-TORO-BEAST-REVOT2BST51HS-6-...
