Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | After years of checking out classifieds and just general keeping an eye out, I finally had a chance to grab my dream boat last weekend at a local estate auction. Got myself a Winchester Guide Boat! I’ve been wanting one of these for a LONG time, I used to stop and talk to Willi from time to time with my dad but never had means to buy one, and now with him passing away my only chance was to find a used one. Getting it set up this week for my first trip out this Saturday. Nice having such a beautiful a local piece, I live about 15 miles from where this was built. So far the only change I’ve made is swapping out the sonar to a Helix 7 DI. I’m trying to decide if I want to run an outboard or not, leaning towards no but I have my great uncles onl Evinrudes Fleetwin, would look pretty nice out back. Great looking boat! Curious, seeing your Wakefield address, where the boat was built. Lived in the U.P. for about 20 years, was just in Wakefield last week. Sunday Lake shoreline was showing off with orange and red. Had a guy from Idaho with me, he was duly impressed.

The boat was built in Winchester, Willies shop was about half a mile west of the end of Cheney Lake Rd on Cty W. Willi ended up selling the business and it moved over to Presque Isle for a few years then the eventually went went under, not sure what happened but it was sad to see. Colors are getting nice up here, I’m thinking last weekend was probably the peak. Hope to get some good pics of them this weekend.

Took my friend up to Lake of the Clouds last Friday, in had to be very close to peak. He lives in the foothills of the mountains in Idaho, very nice country but almost all conifers. He was impressed by all the maples and color. But being a logger, he also thought it was a shame all those great trees were off limits in the Porkies ;>). He had never seen the great lakes before, Superior got his attention.

Location: 31 | Wow almost too nice for fishing, I would have a tiller. Although some may think it sacrilegious, you can also still legally troll with less lines with the outboard when you're searching or want to take a break too.

I'd mount the motor. Never hurts to have a way to get off the water a little quicker in case of bad weather. I gave in and put the motor on. Thought about picking up a newer 4 stroke but the old Evinrude Light Twin just looks right on there, and starts in 1-2 pulls after remembering to turn the gas on. Stopped at Rollie and Helens over the weekend and grabbed a couple more trolling rods and loaded them up with 50 pound Big Game mono, and got some offshore magnum boards. Should be ready to rock this weekend, just gotta put together a tackle box and make some trolling leaders. Edited by milje 10/17/2019 7:59 PM

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | Got out a couple of times but no fish yet, Presque Isle last week in the rain and Plum today. She handles the wind quite well, I was able to hold 2.5 - 3 mph today pulling a pair of Offshore Magnum boards and a Mattlock in a 10ish MPH wind, I’m happy with that. Took the motor off, got a line tangled up in it last week and don’t want to risk it happening with a fish on. Props to Tom Gelb for being able to do this at his age, my back is not happy right now.
