| Hey all,
I'm looking to add to my trolling selection, specifically for white bear lake. Does anyonehave suggestions on headlock vs matlock and color choices? I'm very inexperienced trolling so not entirely sure where to begin. I've got a $100 gift card begging to be spent on a new lure! |

Location: Eastern Ontario | Forget the high end trolling lures for now your C note should get you 3 or 4 reliable standards. I would start with jointed Believer, Jake or Grandma, Depth Raider, in colours that mimic your lakes forage and something completely opposite like chartruse . Jailbird and Strawberry seem to work in both stained and clear water and under bright or cloudy conditions . You don't need a bunch of lures start with a few proven by time and learn exactly where they run with different line lengths and speeds. If its in the water and moves muskies will eat it SOMETIMES |

| get 3 to 4 believers .8 inch straight n jointed,depthraiders. or you could buy 1 perchbaits and 2 to 3 of the previous baits you will get more chance to caught fish whit that than on a headlock . and it will last you really long time. play safe fire tiger,perch, will caught you fish everywhere. big wood get them for ''cheap'' 45$ and buy trolling mike guide so you will know where your lures swim |

| With $100 I'd buy a 10" Jake, 9" Grandma, straight Depthraider and 10" jointed Believer. Yes, I love my mattlocks, but as an inexperienced troller you'll broaden your trolling spectrum with those 4 baits compared to 1SBB. Don't buy into the hype that you NEED expensive baits to catch fish. |

| On WBL, id keep the baits under 8".. smaller baits like depthraiders will suit that lake better. |

| I do have a handful of the lures listed above. Jakes, Believers, SwimWizz, Perchbait, couple of Grandmas. I'm not starting from scratch. I just haven't put in a ton of time doing it. I'm just looking to expand a little more and commit more time to actually getting out and trolling. I've had a garbage year casting so far and just looking for something to break up the monotony of not seeing any #*^@ fish. Looking forward to cooler water temps and those late fall feedbags! |

| Just and FYI but August and September are the absolute worst trolling months in MN when the water temp starts to drop, for basin/suspended fish that is. If you're looking for a great bait that wonders like crazy look at Trucker Lures. Half the price of a mattlock and any color you want. 6"-20" baits so he makes something for everyone. |

That surprises me because on the Larry if I could only pick one month it would be September. Things slow down mid October but we stick it out in November and December because that's when you could catch a whale. |

| When the water temps start to drop, everything crashes shallow.....normally. The rush bite usually starts around now and the shallow water bite stays consistent until water temps drop into the mid to low 60's. The next 3 weeks are by far my most productive casting bite in northern MN. Those big fish that have suspended most of the year are way more susceptible now. |

The next 3 weeks are by far my most productive casting bite in northern MN. Those big fish that have suspended most of the year are way more susceptible now.
I agree. They seem to like sand (and reeds) near weeds but no neccesarily in them. |
