I have missed a few fish this year on quickstrikes but did well in the past. I am using Herbie type rig with one treble. I keep wondering though how you can hook a muskie if it bites the side of the sucker without the treble. Should I be putting the treble right up on the dorsal fin? Two years ago went 7 for 7 using 2 trebles and I am thinking about going back to that rig. Anybody favor 2 vs. 1?

I favor two hooks instead of one. I like the idea of using two smaller 1/0 or 2/0 hooks and not having to fall down in the boat with a bone jarring hookset. I make my own rubber band rigs and assemble it to fit the size sucker. When using two hooks on a sucker 16" and under, you will need to put one in front of the top dorsal and the longer lead underneath, just in front of the rear bottom fins. Put them both on top and the sucker will ride upside down from the weight of the hooks.

Quickset question?

Do you set the hook as soon as possible or use the trolling motor to first get near the fish?

Duffin, it depends on what the fish is doing. If the clicker is going, set the hook. If you pick up the rod and you feel that the fish is till there but not moving you may have to position your boat over the fish.

I like the Herbie rigs, but I like to use two of his trebles, instead of one. So I ususally end up buying a few of his rigs.

I too like the Herbie rig but yesterday I switched to a 2 hook system and it payed off with a legal hooked right in the corner of the mouth. I'm sticking with 2 now even though I don't like all that hardware on the sucker.

I have started using the Howie Rig (single hook) and after a couple weeks of using it I see no reason to go back to the two hook rigs. The Howie is the most natural looking set up I have seen and not too shabby a hooker either.

I think the key to successful sucker rigging is LIGHTLY hooking the treble under the skin, and getting the fish moving before setting the hook. If the fish is moving it is obvious the sucker is in the fishes yap and then hammer away.

I use the Land O Lakes rig with a jig and single trebel...works decent enough for me. I snap a hook set as soon as I hear the clicker or see the bobber go down. I think the longer you wait the worse things can get for the fish, you dont want to allow the musky any time to swallow a rig and get it in the gullet. I'd much rather lose a fish while setting early than see a floater next to my boat because I spent too long trying to get the hooks cut or rig dislodged. I try my best not to chase a fish down because I dont let the sucker swim that far away from the boat.

I use a single treble rig that I tie using Tyger Leader. The posts are right, if the reel is screaming set it. However, if the fish is not moving away give it a little bump with the rod. It usually gets the musky going the other way in a hurry and surprisingly I have never had one drop the rig after a quick bump.I think the little tap may make them think the sucker is trying to get away.

1 treble is a lot safer than 2...for yourself. Does anyone else get hooks shoved into their hand every single time they rig a sucker? I swear the stupid fish are out to piss me off as much as possible. They find ever little twig or weed stalk they can. Also, the other day I saw my bobber go 2' under water and going away from the boat. Ok...A muskie has the sucker. I reel up and feel the fish. I give it a hard hookset and two suckers come up the surface...Yeah, I caught a sucker with a sucker. The one under the bobber caught one the one under the boat.
