I modified the triple D that I got from stan tha man because it ran too deep for where I'm fishing. I cut the lip at about 1.5cm in front of the attachment eye (in the thin part of the lip) and I shaped it to look like the original lip. The action is very similar and it runs to about 3 feet now on a cast. I can't wait to try it out properly in two weeks time. Has anyone else tried this modification? If so, what were your findings?

Divani -

What did you use to cut and shape the lip? Got any pictures of the new lure? I have been wanting to attempt this modification, but dont want to ruin a lure tinkering.

Luke -

Will it work if you leave the lip squared off like that?

Matt made it for me this way. I like it but haven't tried it any other way.

I'll try to scan the lure. It doesn't look like your modification, Luke. The lip has the same shape as the original one but it's only 1/3 of the original size. I'll try to do it this weekend.

I used a hand saw to make a cut like in these pictures but the cut was made closer to the tip of the lip than to the thick part. I then used a wood rasp to round of the lip and I used a wood file to file the edge smooth and I used sanding paper to smoothen the edges and to remove the brims (I don't know whether this is the correct word for the shavings that still cling to the edges after having filed the edge smooth)

Divani,
I initially tried using a shorter, round-shaped lip and was not happy with the action. Then, Matt and Frank Walsh were playin' around with the SQUARE lip up on LOTW this past summer. For what its worth, I like the square lip action better for the shallow modification. I think Frank and Matt put some good pictures of the mod on Walsh's Baystore website.

Secondly, MRoberts made a really shallow running one with a kick butt paint job. He missed an absolutely suicidal fish on the figure 8 last weekend that was easily 46+ inches.

I still like to use the original, even for shallow water applications. I feel you can get more action from the lure.... but it takes more effort to keep it out of trouble. Watching MRoberts easily manuever his shallow runner in and out of cover last weekend opened my eyes a little.
