Posts: 16 | Question. Does anybody run helper springs like Sumo on their trailers? My current boat a Lund 1775 Prov and Trailmaster trailer they are 2016s produced late 15 so have used 4 years. My concern is my last boat /same boat and trailer 2007 model broke a leaf spring in 2011 at 70 mph, I almost crashed I didn't abuse trailer on rough roads although when spring broke I hit a construction old to new pavement with a pretty big dip! I have been worried ever since that experience!! Kinda thinking of these springs as backup if this were to ever happen again. I carry an extra set of leafs n u bolts since then. Any and all opinions would be appreciated! Thanks!! | ||

Posts: 73 | I've never used or seen the Sumos in action, but they look sweet. I had a similar expierience to yours and upgraded to a spring with an extra leaf when I replaced them. When I got my new boat, upgrading to newer heavier leaf springs was one of the first things I did. My friends thought I was silly, but until you've been there I guess you wouldn't understand. I haven't seen an application for boat otrailers in the Sumo style springs, but I like the sound of it! | ||

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, I'm not sure that this type of spring is something you would first have room for, and second, I don't believe the trailer frame would be built to accommodate the spring as well. I would be more apt to replace the current springs with a heavier set to deal with this type of issue. Many times when a really good deal comes around on a new rig, there are two major areas the dealer will "skimp" on....the trailer, and the outboard. The outboard will not be put on as a maximum Horsepower. May times, it can be well below that. The same thing happens with the trailer, and I believe many out there overlook the trailer itself. Many dealers will put the smallest trailer under the rig to get the best possible price point to sell...but that causes issues as some trailers are almost maxed out on their capacity once you put the boat, motor and gas in....leaving very little room for anything extra, let alone then travel down a road that is not optimum. So...the trailer bounds along just fine, but due to being close to max weight, the springs take a beating as they are constantly being flexed more than a heavier trailer would. The result...more flexing = more fatigue, and over time, they wear out and break due to the stress... It is inevitable with any leaf spring combination, but on a trailer that is really close to maximum capacity, it will happen faster. This may be your case here...or it may not be....as I do not know any more specs on the trailer. Do you have a model number for it? If you can....I'd get heavier springs if you can find a set that matches the mounting brackets of your trailer. It may even mean replacing your axle as well to a beefier one to accommodate the new springs, etc. Steve | ||

Posts: 16 | Thanks for Reply's. Both good suggestions! The single axle over slung 3k sumo looks like it would work on my trailer. But you are both probably correct that going with an extra leaf would probably be the best solution. The Trailer was custom ordered not a package boat it was an upgrade. Same with last boat with the Spring Problem. And you are 100% correct about Maxing HP as I did as well. My first Boat was rated at 70HP and I got a 50. From the first time out I always thought about why didn't I Max out!! I also Trailer with the least amount of fuel since then as 35 gallons weighs a lot. Tank was around half full when it happened May be worried about nothing but never want to be sitting on interstate with catastrophic spring failure again! Thanks again both Great Responses!! | ||
