Is the Conquest worth the extra cost over the Tranx 400?

I cannot speak on the Tranx. Conquest is one butter smooth reel. Just be aware that there are 2 different models floating around. 2015 model w disengaging levelwind 5.6 gears. 2018 model has non disengaging levelwind 6.2 gears. My 2015 casts further than the 2018. Either one are capable of super bomb casts! They each have different braking systems as well. Overall I prefer the 2018 model w non disengaging levelwind. You can get them buy it now, brand new, free shipping from top rated sellers for pretty good prices if you can hold out for 15 percent off EBay super coupon.

Its the 2015 that have the non-disengaging levelwind and the 2018 that have the disengaging levelwind.

Non-Disengaging refers to the levelwind being engaged during cast.

Your first sentence is absolutely wrong! The 2015 version has disengaging levelwind. Meaning when casting the levelwind does not move back and forth. How to identify without touching reel? Look at the side plates. The model with the SVS Infinity braking dial opposing the crank handle side plate means it’s 2015 or earlier. The 2015 401 will be stamped 3362 near the underside of the crank handle as well. They did make some in 2014 and possibly 2013. The 2018 version indeed does have non disengaging levelwind. Meaning when I cast or crank the levelwind always moves. Also called synchronized levelwind. How to identify without touching reel? The side plate opposite the crank handle has no SVS Infinity braking dial. The 2018 401 will be stamped 3866 near the underside of the crank handle. I do not question your knowledge of levelwinds. Many retailers are advertising 2018 model and sending 2015 versions. This’s happened to me and I had to dispute the transaction and I won. Maybe you purchased a falsely advertised reel or sampled one?

Is the Conquest worth the extra cost over the Tranx 400?
I’m also wondering this same thing. Thanks for asking this question. I can tell you the Micromodule Gears of my Conquest’s are unbelievable compared to the TE HEG gearing. I have 5 TE that I have been rebuilding since 2009. The TE has been called one of the greatest reels of all time by many Musky fishermen. Conquest has 15lbs. of drag just like the TE. Conquest is dead sexy in its beautiful shiny gold color. It’s honestly a work of art. Conquest is a low profile reel in my opinion it’s tiny in 401 size. I think it’s better than the TE. Replacement parts double the price though. Tranx another work of Shimano art. Except power handle looks silly to me and it isn’t shiny gold. I’m interested in 401A. Never used one. Never sampled one. It’s definitely low profile. It has HEG gears. However that 22lbs. of drag is what would interest me. So does anyone have the newest Conquest and the 400 Tranx? I would love to hear comparisons.

The 2015 conquest 400/401, is the one that is almost identical to the TE 400/401 version, and it has a non-disengaging/synchronized levelwind, like the TE.
This is the old version i'm talking about. Mine is the 401 model, it apeer that some of the smaller version (101) have a disengaging levelwind.

And yes you are correct that the new version also have a non-disengaging level wind, is was misinformed on the new model apparently.

Conquest is a better reel, but it's nowhere near twice the performance of a Tranx 400. I'd get a tranx 500 every day over a conquest.

I have both reels and will be selling my Conquest 400 due to lack of use. The Tranx gets the nod due to the gear ratio and the fact that reel is just a beast. Can’t deny the smooth performance of the Conquest but it is slow compared to the Tranx HGs.

Brian - do you see anywhere that the slow speed of the Conquest could be used where the Tranx 400 cant.

Its funny we consider a 5.6/1 (old Conquest) or 6.1/1 (New Conquest) slow these days when less than 10 years ago it was the norm. I have a couple of Conquests and a 400 Tranx. I love the Conquests for Slow rolling, night fishing bucktails and for prop style topwater batis. My last trip to CA I used to Conquest more than either of Tranx's (HG or PG). I use the HG Tranx 400 on a small bucktail rod and a PG 400 on a Jerk bait rod. Both great reels. The 500 Tranx with all be my go-to for but I really enjoy the Conquest for certain applications.

Slamr, personal opinion only... The Conquest’s slower speed is fine for certain retrieves such as slow rolling and slow topwaters, but I like the much faster line pickup of the Tranx 400 AFTER the fish is hooked. The increased efficiency for picking up slack, whether a fish is on or not, is more important to me.

I have the 301 conquest and the 401 tranx, the conquest is super smooth but has less cranking power but with lures with less drag it's super. The tranx 401 is just a beast, with the first turn at the handle I felt the sheer power of this thing, it's a beast and also smooth but not as Butter smooth as the conquest, but casts also great and quiet.
