I'm just getting started in Musky fishing. So far I have a Abu Garcia Revo Toro S. I think it's 5:3 to 1 . Right now I have it on a 7'9" rod. The second rod I have is 9' rated for 3 1/2 to 10 oz lures. Should I be getting a reel with higher or lower gear ratio or just get the same as my first reel. I am planning on just having two casting and I'll probably be buying a few cheaper trolling rods down the road. Also what are some good recommendations on brand and model?

The Toro S is a good all purpose reel for big blades, swimbaits, and topwater, and a 29 ipt, not too bad for rubber. Although for rubber there are better options for quicker line pickup. You could put the S on the 9' rod and have an all purpose setup. At 7'9" the rod you have may be a better jerkbait rod. So, a faster reel in 6:3 or above would be good. Although, I prefer 30 ipt for jerkbaits, I work them easier that way. There are lots of options in reels in higher speeds. If you prefer Abu, the Beast is solid. Diawa lexas, Shimano Tranx 300 & 400, and Okuma Komodos are all great. You're gonna hear varying opinions, get ready. If you can try them them out in person you can decide. I get deals on Abus, so I've stuck eith them. No issues besides what I've created with them.

looking at the Abu Garcia right now. The Revo Toro Beast low profile. They have a 4.9:1 with 27"lpt and a 6.2:1 with 31"lpt. My current reel is a Abu Garcia Revo Toro S with a 5.3:1 and 26"lpt.

Use the shorter rod for glider 10” phantom Canadian crush. Get a Shimano Calcutta 400/401 D for the 9’0” bucktails Shumway giant flasher are excellent. The Calcutta D you won’t even feel them (good) you can get a power handle from Dave’s reel service if you can swing it. The Ds are going for 200-230 used and pop up on eBay and buy/sell a lot. There’s a 401D on buy/sell now for 230 from slimetime2 he’s legit.

I wouldnt recommend the Calcutta D there are far better options then that reel, if you look you can find plenty of new reels for less then 230 dollars. Just my two cents, I have two Calcutta D’s and they are are last resort backups and I mean last.

20 guys could tell you 20 different reels, people like different things. If you like low profile and want to stay abu, I would suggest beast 4.9-1. I’ve used all the reels, they’re all good, the question is what do you fish and how? I personally like to move my baits as slow as possible and prefer giant baits that are hard to pull and low gear ratios accomplish that without making my hands and shoulders ache after 10 hours of fishing hard. Also I have broken faster reels of all makes (including Shimano) fishing large baits.
