| I did a search and found helpful suggestions on what speed to run when trolling but something I thought of today while fishing on the very dark stained waters of the chain where I live. Do you factor in how dark/stained the water is when you set your trolling speed? Just for grins I trolled down the river between the lake I live on and the next one rather than just running the approx. 1.5 miles on plane like normal. I don't troll often and don't really know what I am doing but caught one mid thirty fish and lost another that jumped and threw the bait. Glad I decided to troll. I was going about 3.2mph. Is that about right for very dark water? I caught a fish but don't know if it was pure luck or if I should be going slower as a rule. |

Location: Eastern Ontario | your not going over to the dark side are you ? you had action from 2 fish so your speed was right . I troll between 3.5 and 5 in the warm water period looking for what works and do a lot of Ivans to see if the hit is on an inside or outside turn . Don't zombie troll keep changing things up. Don't imagine prey swim any slower in stained water. |

| Thanks for the suggestions. I did alternate on the turns on the river, running on outside on one, inside turn on the next. going back up river a couple times so I hit both sides of the turn. Both fish hit on an inside turn.
I plan on doing more trolling this fall. I like casting but I have a bad disc that the docs wanted to operate on about 10years ago and some days it makes casting more than a couple hours very uncomfortable. Plus, when it gets real cold, I don't like having to wear gloves, dealing with the ice on rod tips, etc. I do have a little trouble staying focused when trolling, need to work on that. Casting I do a good job of staying focused, anticipating a strike. |

Location: Eastern Ontario | I used to cast 12 or more hours a day but at 75 I now limit my casting to about the last hour of daylight. I honestly think you catch on average bigger fish trolling That said the last 7 years I have spent more and more time on the Larry 95% trolling. Truck is packed alarm set for 4 am looking for a horse.

| I don't let water color dictate my speed nearly as much as temperature. I may slow it down .3-.5 in really dark water but that's about it. That being said, I slow WAY down after dark. |
