When you're using a jig ripper, how do you do a figure 8? I've been doing it one-handed with my left hand on the jig ripper and the rod butt in my left armpit. The rod butt is 20", so everything feels secure, but I'd hate to find out the hard way that I'm doing something wrong.

i keep my hand on the jig ripper but i grab the butt of the rod with my other hand. your one arm technique feels pretty solid to me too and i think that's a legit way to do it but i couldn't extend my rod to get my bait deep enough doing it that way. definitely takes some getting used to but not losing feeling in the tips of my fingers from palming the reel is worth it.

You are doing everything correct. I have caught a ton of fish on figure 8 using the Jig ripper up to 54" and I do it exactly as you described. Took me a day to get used to it, now I wont cast with out one.
Good Luck
