Yesterday I was in the water next to my dock, cleaning out weeds, branches and assorted other debris that had gathered there in anticipation of company. Being on an "inside turn" might be good for muskies, but it is also where stuff collects. I got out and went on the dock. Before putting my shirt back on I went to shake off the weeds and saw something fly into the water. Realized it was my wedding ring. I got in and ran my hands through the muck for almost an hour without luck. I looked online for a metal detector and found something called ringfinder.com. I called and he came after work this afternoon. Nice guy, approached it in a very calm, methodical method. Long story short, after finding over a half dozen old beer can pull tabs, a .32 cartridge casing, numerous nails, stainless steel rod, spinner blade and iron bar, assorted bits of metal, he had pretty well cleared the area. He had been using a large steel sifter to dig down and then brought the debris to shore where he went over it with a smaller pin pointer. He was not getting many hits after almost an hour but on a hunch he went over one of the piles on the shore from went he first started. Earlier he had been hopeful that was the one but had given up after finding a pull tab, a rusty nail and on a second try, an iron bar in the sand under the pile. The third time was the trick! On his hands and knees he pulled out the wedding ring I will have worn for 43 years next Thursday. He was very happy for me and said that he thought he had a good signature with that scoop but was put off by all the other metal. He told me the story of finding a ring in 12' of water last summer in the Minocqua area using scuba gear. Guy had snagged a lure on something and rather than breaking it off (bass gear) decided since it was a hot day to dive in and retrieve it. Off went the ring. Took him a while in scuba gear, but he found it. He said his best day he found three rings. He has found rings that have been lost for a long time. Mine should have been easy but with all the crap in the water, took longer than he expected. (Property was part of a fishing resort from the 30s through the early 70s). Guy is a truck driver and does this as a hobby. I gave him a nice reward but the only thing he had asked for over the phone was $50 to cover his 2.5 hour round trip to my place from Wausau. If you ever find your self in this position, I would not hesitate to contact him. PM if you would like more information. Needless to say, I am very happy. When my wife bought me that ring, she had saved for months, it was a big expense for her. Two years ago my left hand got pretty smashed up in a shop accident and the ER tech wanted to cut it off. I insisted I would get it off and eventually pulled it off over a wound that would need 7 stitches to close and the resulting swelling. The tech left the room because she didn't want to watch. But I still have it in one piece!

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | First ring came from a pawn shop for $15. Lost a bunch of weight and it doesn't fit. Bought the current one online for $20 or something. My wife and I aren't big on rings. She's on her second as well, lost the first one putting on sunscreen on the boat.

jonnysled - 8/8/2018 11:30 AM might be time to pack on some weight NO8!! any chance this post could catch the same fish twice?? in two days ??? Well, I am down 40# from when I had the ring re-sized because of scarring from the shop accident but it fits pretty snug most of the time. Think it was a matter of my hands in the water for a long time and the water making them slippery.

Posts: 556 | YES_- Awesome story and nice to know others out there willing to help at a MORE THAN RESONABLE PRICE... Rings !! While my wife and I still have our originals after 38 yrs of marriage... We aren't really into the jewelry thing so I think we spent about $400 total on our rings back in 1979.... If we had to replace them TODAY--- I might spend $500 total on the pair…..

Posts: 8717 | An old family friend lost his wedding ring in the lake after cleaning a bunch of fish. They spent several hours looking but it was gone. The next year they went back for their annual fishing trip, and he was standing on shore near where he thought he might have lost it. "Hey, what's that? Holy CRAP!!" There it was in about a foot of water, plain as day. What are the odds?

Posts: 140 Location: Northern Illinois | cool story. Awesome to get it back like that, especially on such a darkly stained chain. We were out fishing all day, super hot, pulling up to the campsite, my brother bails out the back of the boat & comes up swearing..... he felt his ring slide off in about 15' of water. He dove for like an hr. trying to find it & went back with a metal detector. No Bueno. LOL.

Couple times he predicted it was just going to be an old metal pull tab and sure enough, that was it. He always checked though. He also found large iron pieces, which he didn't pull out. Guessed that they were old pads from a dock post.

Posts: 134 | The guy from Wausau is the same guy that found my son's ring in the lake we are on. His fell off about eight feet from the end of the pier. Four of us looked and dove for three hours trying to find it. My son looked on line and found this guy, he came up on a Sunday and found it in 5 minutes.

We think he had mine in about 5 minutes too, but because of the other metal in the scoop, he missed it the first two times he checked.

Posts: 4 | Now you will cherish the king, and I am sure you will remember the day you almost lost it for a long time. Things like wedding rings are a very important part of our life to take care of. Just like on the wedding day, we strive to find a person who takes great pictures so that we can repeat these happy moments again and again. Subsequently, we keep memories of this day; the most important reminder is an engagement ring. I love weddings, and I think it's great that you still found your ring. Then these wise nice try teenagers come up behind him and are lobbing pennies over his shoulders and he was obvious to the whole thing.
