2003 4Stroke Johnson 50. Didn’t use the engine that much last year and had fresh oil. Left it over winter, changed last weekend and it looks like chocolate milk. I’m assuming water is getting mixed in, what do I check to troubleshoot? Nothing is leaking out on the ground and she ran fine while I warmed up the engine before discovering the problem.

Thanks,

Rob

Could be missing a seal/o-ring on one of screws on the top. Won't leak but is below the water line and water will get in slowly. That is where I would check first.

remove the lower unit and pressure test to find the leak. I would suspect the seal under the water pump, but a pressure test will tell you for sure. IIRC the lower units are pressure tested to 5-7 psi.

You have water in your engine oil? The problem it going to be a gasket and/or warpage of the heads or intake manifold. I wouldn't run it until you figure it out.

Had the same issue with a 2003 60hp. The diaphragm for the fuel pump went bad and gas was getting into the oil - easy fix to do yourself.
