I've only been foolish enough to fish for musky about three years now. In that time, I've been on approximately 7 trips to Vilas County and have only boated 3 fish. Most of what I've learned was taught by my father-in-law, who I've found out doesn't know technique or their patterns as well as I thought despite the 25 years of fishing for them.

Since I don't get to do it often, I've thought about joining a local Muskies, Inc. chapter for educational opportunities, as well as maybe learning something about local musky lakes in southern WI or northern IL.

I'm sure many of you are members and I just wanted to know if it would be worth my while given what I am trying to accomplish.

Just from my experience, I'd been fishing for muskies for three years with no success; I got my MI member card in the mail one Monday and by that Tuesday night had my first legal, with a low-40's two days later. The count is up to 6 now for the year.
Go on a MuskieFirst outing, too, you'll learn lots and meet some real cool folks. good luck, m

This is a great way to learn new techniques about musky fishing, meet fellow musky nuts, and learn different waters. As well as joining a local chapter, there is also a ton of useful information on the Muskie Inc. website that you can find useful that isn't available to nonmembers. There are a ton of chapters in Illinois to join: www.muskiesinc.com/chapters/index.cfm

I hope you bring your father-in-law along to show him how much has changed in 25 years of musky fishing.

Please join. Your money will go to represent our favorite fish, they are trying to reach a goal in membership. Monthly chapter meeting with guest speakers, get togethers a monthly magazine, raffles, all sorts of activities not to mention making alot of friends. I joined the FRV chapter but I am close to the quad county hawg hunter meeting place so I will do both.

Muskies Inc. Is heading I a new direction and Informing members and Nonmembers about Muskies. You get to meet new people at outings and events. Its Great But like everything else there are a few Elite Buttheads around to piss ypou off, but they are becoming more and more unwelcome in the New Muskies Inc.

I agree with you, Chris. Perry has done an excellent job as president. I hope whoever is elected to replace him carries on in the same vein.

Muskies, Inc is a great group of people and a great resource for anyone to learn more about the mysterious Mr. E. Masquinongy. It's also a place to meet a ton of new fishing buddies!

Both Mikie & Chris raise some great points. MI is doing a much better job of trying to educate its members and the general public on the subject matter of muskies. The foundation for MI was set a long time ago, and it seems like recently they are starting to rebuild on that very philosophy.
The comment about the MF Outings is a good one. I attended last years outing on the "Toilet Bowl" and it was a blast! Great fun and yet there was some interesting discusion on what all the anglers encountered for that day.

Unfortuneately, there still are those that act like KGB agents when it comes to discussing info about where, how, what, etc. they catch muskies on, but they are the minority. However, I will note, that in a recent issue of the MI mag, an article was written highlighting an individual that uses the term "not specified" quite abit, therefore leaving nothing to help educate others. Maybe some day MI will change this ruling so that those looking for info may find reliable data to say plan a vacation, take their son fishing, etc.

Bottom line dpratt, remember, you will get out what you put into it also. By all means, join a local chapter (we have a few members from the Woodstock area) ask questions, and most of all enjoy your time while you are learning. We have all been there at one time or another, and I havent met a muskie angler yet that can go out and honestly say that he or she didnt learn something new each and every season. The very best of luck to you!

Thanks for the feedback! You've reinforced what I was already thinking.

I've sent an email to the President of the "South of the Border" chapter and am waiting for a response.

I don't see that anyone has said it yet so I guess I'll be the first, try before you buy. If you are in the Chicago area you are likely close to more then one chapter. I believe the other chapters are run same as ours, open doors to all. Depending on the speaker we may ask you to make a small donation at the door to cover speaker fees. Go to a couple meetings at each chapter and see which one jives best with your personality.

I might be wrong here, but I think that the SOB chapter is doing an every other year outing to LOW. Last year (if I am thinking of the correct chapter,) they had HUGE success. Many of the dudes that went caught their personal best, plus most caught several fish.

To me, one of the neatest things about MI is the chapter outings. I really do enjoy fishing with others.

Yes, I believe you are correct about the LOTW outing. It's mentioned on their website.

I sent in my app today to be part of Chapter 14. The next meeting is in two weeks.
