Just curious, anyone know how quick a musky, say 50”, can swallow a sucker (15”)?

Pretty quickly, which is why we use quick strike rigs.

A 50" muskie can fit an entire 15" sucker in its mouth with nothing sticking out instantaneously. Swallowing the bait only takes a second or two.

Which may be true. But when sucker fishing with a quick strike rig it never happens like that.

Instantly if they want to, they don't always though. Sometimes they will hold on to them gentle like a lion with a lion cub and just sit there not even hearing the clicker. Mood of the fish. When you do hear the clicker get in an away or over the fish and set the hook.

I was live bait fishing with a shorter leader (12") and believe I had the line cut. I am guessing I waited too long to set and the fish swallowed the bait and the line got cut on the hookset. Had the fish follow just prior to hitting and looked to be 50"+. Live and learn I guess. Hope the fish lives.

seen it done in a few seconds.....Drives me nuts up where I live watching guys give fish 10 plus minutes before they set the hook. They are killing lots of fish.

We use quick-set rigs for just that purpose, a quick-set. Even some of the celebs on TV worry me giving a fish way too long to be "moving away" from them. I normally just scream, set the hook already!

kenk that's funny i was going to tell the same thing.i have seen that a lot more than one time. it should be called slow rig ;).i have seen up to at least 1 min before the hook set. most of the time they grab the sucker right in the middle so a 7/0 circle hook right at the dorsal is enough,so the fish hook himself many times and there is almost zero chance to kill it and the sucker move a lot more naturally.that's how i fish for pike during winter. and ive got more bite that way than when the shiner or the sucker is covered of trebles

Agree with others, they can swallow it very fast if given the chance. When fishing with a QS rigged sucker I keep the fish under constant pressure, never slack line, until they're moving away. The pressure usually gets them moving and if they try to reposition the sucker to swallow it, the pressure from the rod doesn't allow that to happen. Sure, you'll pull it out of their mouth once in a while but 99% of the time they eat it again.
