Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | Never done it been trying for the last 2 weeks. First week river refroze this week we were pounded with snow. Maybe next week. Has any one done it before? Planning on using my 9 foot trolling rod with tekota line counter. 4oz flat no roll stinkers and 5.0 Circle hooks. With a gob of night Crawlers on it. Any other help Appreciated.

Posts: 32882 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Sounds like you are on the right track. It's pretty much like hooking a truck by the bumper.

Posts: 833 | That is basically the idea. When I last did that fishing we did exactly what you described. It is basically a waiting game and then suddenly the truck Steve mentioned takes off with your hook in it's mouth. The fight of the sturgeon is excellent, enjoy the ride.

Posts: 67 | i'd lighten up on your weights a bit for the light biters, using a 1 or 2 oz egg sinker will probably get you more bites.

if we talk about 100 pounds + fish i would use a circle like gama thick 7/0. sturgeon fight like no other freshwater fish,it fight x10 like a musky. if you don't want to get trouble with panfish put your bunch of worms into nylon sock. have fun! ps your flat no roll sinker is perfect , so if there is current it stay there, egg sinker is not so good Edited by supertrollr 4/16/2018 9:12 AM

Posts: 1241 Location: Walker, MN | I like to move every hour if we aren't getting bites. It's hard to beat the head of a hole. Use your electronics to locate them, if you have side imaging even better. Grab them by the tail and they are easy to handle, no net needed. Please don't grab them by the gills like a muskie. Cheers and hook-sets!

supertrollr - 4/17/2018 10:48 AM white can reach 1000 pound Atlantic over 600 lake must be around 150 max The WI DNR has netted, tagged and released some close to 200 pounds from the Winnebago system. They are pretty amazing fish. Several spots on the Wolf river where you can see them around this time of the year as they are spawning, west of New London on Cty. X, there is a paved walking path, with rip rap put there by the state and just west of Shiocton on Hwy 54, another viewing area. Don't know what impact the weather will have on the spawning.

Posts: 2011 | Yep whites get huge! If any of you ever get to the Portland, OR area, check out www.nwsturgeonadventures.com ...Charlie is a sturgeon fishing nut.. Pull in a few 200Lb + beasts in heavy current and the beer goes down pretty good at the end of the day.

Posts: 1241 Location: Walker, MN | 60"-70"ers are pretty common now on the rainy. One hundred pound fish are caught once and a while. They are a blast. I'm headed up in the morning, the goal is a 70"+ Attachments ---------------- 20160314-IMG_0679-001.jpg (68KB - 497 downloads)

Posts: 32882 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | North, Take a look at the Lake of the Woods MN Tourism website, guide links there for the resorts on the rainy out of Baudette, where the sturgeon action is crazy good. Many of the resorts have full time Captains on board, and any could refer you to a good guide.

Not sure if and when I will do it but I have been up there during the summer and talked to folks about the sturgeon and it sounds like a lot of fun. I would not keep one, even though I have eaten smoked sturgeon and thought it tasted a lot like a quality smoked turkey breast.
