I was out yesterday and casted about 2 inches too close to the rocks.  The lip broke off just short of the eye.  I could not find the other half or I would reattach it.  Any suggestions on what I can do to make this bait  work again?  Or should I just hang it up as a reminder of how not to cast at rocks?  It does still dive somewhat,  it just don't have the wobble it once did.  I remember seeing a post a while back about someone wanting to shave the lip off to make it go shallow.  If still interested, I have one for sale:)   I guess I'll just have to chalk one up for poor concentration and order another one.  Chad, I noticed you have one the same color.  Better keep a close eye on it!!

If you take a grinder or file and shape that a little you will have something that is very valuable, a shallow DDD. Some people out there figured out that the shallow DDD is VERY effective in shallow water and made their own. Matt told me he's thinking about making a shallow version right out of the box.

Chinewalker, I think I will give it a try.  Does anyone know if this will weaken the lip, just in case I actually got into a big girl with it?  Here are a couple pics of where it broke.

That bait is definitely salvageable. I would round off or square up that lip and give it a try.

Bass pro has a musky/saltwater lure that is a deep diver. I bought two and immediately ground the lip down and made them shallow divers. It's a great mod on some baits.

Luck you. It broke right about where you would grind it down anyway. Just use something with some teeth on it to shape those corners similar to the contour of the original lip and you're good to go with your new shallow DDD. Wishing I had one with me Saturday when we were camping on a 4-6ft flat.

As stated above, some of the "in the know" fishermen are diliberatly doing this to their Triple D baits. Take a file to it and square the lip off. I,also, have heard rumors that this will be put into production.SSSSHHHH!!

Don't tell anyone.

The shallow runners that I am making for myself are cut straight across the lip about 1/8" to 1/4" in front of the lip reinforcement on the underside of the lip.

The DDD is very "tinkerable".. With glue, drill, grinder, saw, and screw eyes you can can make countless versions of the DDD.. It is solid plastic.

Jointed models: Cut the bait in half anywhere...throw some screw eyes in.. Depending on the location of the cut you will get different actions.. I like a cut 3/4" in front of the middle hook hanger. Most think that is too far foward.. It is personal preference I guess??

Double D : Cut or grind the lip in any formation as long as the left is mirrored to the right. Although, I do know one chap that likes his lips offset.

Squirely DDD: Cut the tail off and glue a rubber duckie on the back. Or throw a twister tail on the back hook.. Thats what I do.

"Ball of flash": if you want to see the original action of the first DDD's made... just cut/grind off the fins.. This will give the bait more of a tumbling action rather than a gliding action..

Count down or floating: drill a hole and fill with lead or cork.. Make sure the drill point is at the balance point.. We are designing a custom weighting system kind of like a J.B weight system but better.. It is almost done..

I will put all these modifications on our website after I get my buck.. I am on vacation till then

If you have any questions on modifying the Triple D you can email me at [email protected]

Thanks everyone.  Lots of great ideas out there.  I'm going to square the lip off a little better where it is at and see how I like that.  If I don't then I'll try rounding them a little.  Then who knows what next.  Might try the jointed.  Thanks again!

Matt, thanks for all those great tips. I kind of like the action of the ones I have but it's nice to know if I make a really bad cast, I have not trashed the lure.

I spent 2 hours throwing the DDD around Hennipen Island (up in 2' of water, pure rock) on Mille Lacs w/out breaking anything, bent the line attachment a little, but tapping the rocks gave me some viscious strikes when nothing else was working (no hook-ups).
