| So I just starting fishing for tiger Muskie last year and I am trying to match up some rods with the reels I have. Was hoping I could get some advice on what my best options are for the gear I have. I have an 8' Cabelas predator MH fast, 3/4-4 oz. Two 7'6' Heavy fast, one cabelas Im8, one Shimano EXage. Both 1/2-1 1/2oz. I have a revo winch 5.4.1, pulling 22" per turn, one silver max 6.4.1 pulling 26", and a revo sx 7.1.1, pulling 29". I know these are considered bass reels but I have landed a few Muskies on them. I don't throw very big lures and I use quality line and leader. I mostly throw bass size spinner baits, some musky killer bucks, and some >2 oz rapalas. Hoping you guys can help me out with what my best setup options are. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | You have asked similar questions elsewhere on the boards, which is probably why no one has answered you here.
My advice: Buy a muskie reel, plain and simple, and be done with it. Bass reels generally are not designed to throw even small muskie lures, and bass rods also are lacking. Match up a muskie rod and reel, and throw all the lures from you wish. Watch the bst board here for deals, there are killer deals available there regularly. If necessary, sell one of your bass outfits to get it done.
Rod brands? TI, Tooth Tamer, Abu, Fenwick, R&H Shield, etc. Buy a medium heavy 7'6" or 8' model for the lures you seem to want to toss.
Reels? Abu is my favorite muskie reel builder for quality and value. The new Shimano reels look good too. If I was looking for an entry level reel, it would be the Max Toro |

Location: Wisconsin River | I agree with "get a musky combo" but the (bass) winch will stand up to small bucktails ok. and the silver max or sx for small jerk baits. any true musky baits medium to large size will drasticly shorten the life of those reels. Rods are rated to work with a specific weight lure. I would not recomend exceding the recomended weight on the rod. Using a musky rod to cast light lures is not ideal but works, and wont limit you in the future to only small baits. |

| Thanks! Yea I think I am gonna get the Lexa wn 300. Put it on a MH fast 8’ Cabela’s predator musky rod. Now just gotta figure which ratio to go with on the Lexa. And which handle to go with. Leaning towards the 7.1.1 with the double paddle handle. But not sure on either yet. Decisions, decisions. |

Whatever gear ratio you decide, will dictate which handle comes on your Daiwa Lexa. Typically, you dont have a choice. Unless you buy seperately.
If i was going to get an all purpose musky reel, Lexa in your case, id get a 5 gear reel.
If you go after that 6.3:1 WN edition with the blue handle, id go power handle. Just my opinion. |

| I have two of the Cabela,s musky rods. One is the spinning model with either the Stradic 4000 or 5000xk spinning reel and the other is the MH 8' casting model with either the Shimano 301 or the Okuma Komodo 364 left hand. Both have hah limited use but I find them to be very good casting rods. In truth these are the only musky rods that I have used, but I am satisfied with how they handle...DaveMP |
