Longtime no see for me.....they still let Slamr around here? Hey, you guys are probably a lot more familiar as a group with other esox besides masquinongy. Caught this pike in a small harbor behind my father's place on Flathead Lake in Montana....very striking vertical markings....any thoughts????

Chubby little guy, maybe he didn't outgrow his juvenile markings yet. I've noticed that pike below 25" or so can have some crazy colors. After 25" or so they all start to become pretty uniform it seems, for the most part anyway, I've seen some cool looking 30"+ as well

Very cool markings on that fish, must be a hybrid of some sort. Larry Ramsell should know.

Thx for the answers guys. I figured it must be a natural pike as there have never been any musky or tiger musky in any part of the Flathead drainage. Pretty looking little fatso.

PS: Nice to hear from you Larry....been a longtime.....

You know Todd, nobody really fishes for them on the north end of Flathead but in the southern, more shallow end they do. Also the Flathead River produces quite a few in the sloughs. I keep most of them because fish and game really doesn't want them in the lake (got there by illegal stocking upstream) and my wife loves eating pike. I caught this guy two days after the above fish.....the next one was the year before and does have some vertical markings also.....the last one is a real fatty I caught about 4 years ago....it is obese.....none of these suffer from food deprivation.....
