I know that in the middle of summer like this trolling can be the most effective way to cover water and put fish in the boat. I have tried trolling with no results and think i want to try going faster but how fast? What is the fastest you guys have ever caught a fish while trolling?
I usually go 2-3mph and have heard of up to 10mph. What do you guys think?

Thanks
Jake

I don't do an enormous amount of trolling. But from what I've read and learned, it really depends on the body of water you're fishing and the conditions. Sometimes you can't go slow enough. But many other times I know that you should go as fast as your lures will allow you to. That will vary with every lure. But I know many people who consistently troll anywhere from 6-7 MPH.

A muskie can swim in bursts up to 30mph....I dont think you can troll too fast if the conditions dictate a fast presentation.

Depends on the lure you are trolling. I usually go 4-5 mph. But I've done well going 7-9 mph trolling jerkbaits.

thanks guys, also i have plastic rod holders im afraid if i speed up to 5-7mph they might snap if a fish hits. What do you guys think, should I be ok with plastic or should i get steel ones?

Thanks

Absolutly go with the Down Easters!

Start trolling about 4 mph and keep speeding up in 1/2 mph incraments until you catch fish or lures blow out. The longer crankbaits seem to stay in the water better than shorter. Bigger is ok because the forage is also bigger late in the year. 8" believers (on the deep setting) will take lots of speed. I have a couple of 10"ers and they can really put a strain on your rod at 5-6 mph but the big non-jointed ones have an awesome tail wiggle. On my last two trips out I got one musky each trip running 6 lures. Both came on believers, a 10" straight crackle frog and an 8" straight "purple daze" from none other than Mr. Stan Durst.

Ok Stan, Force the truth out of me. It is only because I did not take a picture. I hope too many people don't see this post but I didn't take a picture because it was only 28-30 inches. The young'ins sure are purty tho eh? I released the fish without touching it or taking it out of the water. I quit taking pictures of sub 40 inch fish.

Don't worry however, The Purple Daze will see some good water time and a pic will hit your email eventually, I'm sure. I don't like making predictions because they get you in trouble but that is one fine lure.

Ok Lobi,
Your off the hook, but only cause you told me the young'en was purty.
Capt. Larry and a lot of his clients have boated a lot of nice musky on the Purple Daze. He has been trying to get me a picture of a fellow that boated a 54 1/2 with a 26 girth on the Purple Daze but the fellow hasn't given him one yet. Man I sure would love to put that on the front page of my site. Heck, I would just like to see the picture. The first one you catch in the big bracket you like, pat it on the head and tell it "Stan says hi" for me before you let her go.
I am going out on the "Tuning" this afternoon with my Son and hope to put him into one before I have to take him back to the airport Tuesday to go back to College. He hasn't gotten his first one as yet.
Hit them hard lobi, the "big one" is coming.
