Posts: 4266 | It's a Rockfish. An Alaskan Yelloweye Rockfish?.....and I'd rather fish for halibut than salmon.... Looks like a member of the grouper family and I bet It's delicious. Beav Edited by Beaver 8/17/2003 6:43 AM

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | That's a beauty. I'll bet you caught it fishing for Halibut. Looks like the bay leading out of Homer Spit, am I right? And yes..very tasty.

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | That is a cool fish! I am staying away from the salt because I am afraid that if I get too close, I will want to stay until I have caught most of what there is to catch, and I don't have that many years left. I went fishing once just for the halibut. :);)

Posts: 384 Location: Eagle River, Alaska | Too much fishing experience here. Beav you are right it is a yellow eyed rockfish sometimes mistakenly referred to as red snapper up here. And lobi you are correct about the location going out of Homer. Steve you would have had a kick fishing for halibut. This was an overnight trip where we encountered wind and a riptide going around the point that nearly swamped the 65 foot boat I was on....scary. Water is pretty chilly up here. Anyway we got way out to the Barren Is and about midnight we had a school of 20 to 40 lbs halibut on the surface. Some were even caught on flyrod. Quite the hoot. Am lamenting no musky fishing this year ..... very sad. BrianW

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | sad..yes very sad. I hate catching a 150 lb Halibut too. It takes a long time to bring them in, then your arms are sore, then there is so much excellent fish to eat. Sad indeed. Everyone should make at least one Halibut trip to Alaska, you won't forget it. The salmon fishing is a ton of fun too. Forget about the great Lakes Kings we get. Try to turn around a 40 pounder in a small swift river on 17 lb line, chasing it in your waders and trying not to fall in over the top. I've only been once but will return. It was a VERY Memorable trip.

Posts: 4266 | DOC, you gave it away!!!! Your attachment says Yelloweye Rocky. Hell, I'm a Pollack and couldn't have made it through highschool without help getting the answers, but even I picked up on that clue! Bet they're yummy blackened! Beav
