Headed up to Crystal Falls on Thursday will be there for a week or 10 days, depends on the fishing. Was hoping to hit little bull and peavy mainly but, lots of rain lately has me worried that the system will be blown out. Also was going to hit stretches of the Menominee but have similar concerns about water level.

If rivers are too high i'll hit usual suspects (Stanley, Smokey and Chicagoan) any info would be appreciated...if all else fails I guess I can stop in Luckeys and see whats up.

I've been up there a few times with little success so I can't help you much. I'm going back this year a lot more prepared than I was before. Most of the new information and knowledge I'll be taking with me is from this forum. We were mostly targeting Muskie, but like I said not much success. But we did fish Chicagon and did ok with smallmouth. What do you plan on fishing for?

Planning on fishing all Musky, I have had excellent luck on the Paint this time of year, just not nearly as much rain and I dont live in the area anymore so I can't get there as frequently. Usually I'm throwing 9's or topraiders on the paint.
Thinking maybe the smaller flows could be worth hitting (West Branch of Paint and the Net), if water levels are up.

Did you try night fishing for musky on Chicagoan or just target smallies?

Can usually find all the eyes and bass I need on the little inland lakes, my place is on Sawyer.

My wife is from the Yoop near crystal falls. Im very interested in scouting this stretch of the paint out so I can start turning my "inlaw trips" into "musky trips". On google earth, the paint river looks pretty fast near the dam in Crystal falls, is the stretch above or below the dam navigable in an 18ft boat? Is one stretch far superior fishing wise?

Well I'm from Chicago so I get up there twice if I'm lucky. Didn't try Chicagon at night. A lot of people have been telling me to try that. The target species was musky but we fished Chicagon on our last day and after about 4 hours of no signs of musky we just decided to have a little fun with the smallies. Before this year there was very little planning that went into the fishing part of the trip which I'm sure was the main problem. But this year I plan on fishing Emily, Stanley, and maybe the paint river. But I'm still looking for my first musky and it sounds like Emily is the place to get that done.

Above the dam you will be fine, I fished my 17' deep V in there no problem. But as always be careful. If your launching right above the dam, the water is a little shallow and there is a large rock somewhere over there (what I've been told) I didn't see it or hit it when I was there.

I usually fish the stretch below Crystal, little bull dam is where I put in. Paint Pond gets tons of pressure, that is below horse race rapids from little bull. I prefer little bull because there is access to Peavy and the diversion canal can give up some monsters. Target the section from Little Bull Dam to Mud Lakes, this entire stretch of river holds quality fish. Found out that just about every river in the Western UP holds em, just have to look hard enough

I fish out of a 17ft fiberglass boat, just have to be smart.

Do you launch above or below the dam because it looks like mud like above.

Went up there and found out little bull dam launch is closed, they are replacing a gate on the dam. Pretty big bummer. There are two dams in Crystal on the paint. One above m-69 and one way below, the one way below is little bull. Never fished above the dam up river of m-69

I wouldnt expect it to be open, at least there is a boat ramp for Peavy less than 1/2 mile away
