Posts: 98 | Just curious if muskies on deep weeds 8 ft down or greater will come up for shallow running baits like bucktails, topwaters or subsurface lures

Posts: 415 Location: MN | Absolutely. Coming up from 8 ft down is nothing, and they are not necessarily on the bottom when they're in 8 ft of water either. Maybe under some circumstances you have to put it right on their nose - neutral/negative fish, no visibility + lots of waves, etc. but generally an active fish will move that far and much further to run a bait down.

Posts: 119 | Most definitely. Fish suspended in 15' or more water come up to shallow (5' or less) trolled cranks or bucktails. 15' to a musky is the equivalent of you walking to your fridge for a sammich lol. Its actually common mistake that anglers make is trolling too deep. In your instance of casting weeds, its entirely possible to have a fish come up out of the cabbage. Now while there are more efficient ways to fish that kind of situation I wouldn't rule it out at all.

Posts: 88 | We fish bucktails just under the surface on some spots with weeds 17+ feet down and we have caught/seen plenty of fish. So they have absolutely zero problem coming up from fairly deep water to hit baits at the surface

Posts: 343 | I've caught a bunch of muskies and tigers who have come up for a topwater, some fish over 15', so yes.

Posts: 1209 | Top water works for me in 25' not saying the fish are on the bottom but I will throw a suik in 75' over a bucktail.

Posts: 3240 Location: Racine, Wi | So with the consensus being yes, some things to think about. What percentage of the time is a musky active? What things make their mood change to active? With the mind set that most of the time they are neutral to inactive, what changes do you have to make based on their current demeanor? Lots of things to think about. But when you're out there, whether it's over 8 fow or 70 fow, you'll have to learn to adjust. We've caught fish on topwaters over 70 feet of water one day, and had to make adjustments the next day as the attitudes of the fish changed. Bottom line is, don't be afraid to change things up if what you are doing is not working. You might have to count a dawg down, rip a crank or minnow bait, throw topwater vs. a bucktail, etc, troll a crankbait deeper, troll a crankbait in the wash.

Posts: 833 | The Suspended Fish we caught on Sunday sounded on our sonar between 30' and 40'. It eventually hit a crank bait at 18'. So yeah, they'll come up if you give them a good enough reason.
