From all the reading I've done only difference between the 300 & 400 is width. I've got a 300D that seems to hold plenty of line but it's on a small twitching rod. I tend to make much longer casts with rubber baits. You guys think the 300 would be big enough for that application? I'm ready to order one but no 400s in stock yet anywhere...

Been looking online. Most places say May or June availability.

I use the 300 tranx, on my sling blade with 80lb sufix 832, works great.

On a bomb cast is the spool reduced a lot? What do you think about the reel size in your hand? Room to spare?

The question for me is if the smaller size of the 300 worth losing a few IPT at the end of the cast? They both seem sized for comfortable palming - not like a lexa 300 vs 400 type of difference - just wondering if you have any first hand input.

I saw on one of those review videos on the 300. Looked really small in the guys hand. Like I said I'm fine with the 300D which has same capacity as the 300 Tranx, but it is on a rod that typically sees shorter casts. I imagine it would get pretty low bombing out a mag dog or worse zinging a top water out a quarter mile...

If spoolwidth is the only difference between the 300 & 400, when using 65lbs line probably the 300 would be the best choice for comfortable fishing big lures

Wanted to follow up on this. I did some calculations of IPT vs. line out for the 300 and 400 HG. A graphic is attached. Looks a little goofy - after resizing to fit within forum requirements a couple lines are missing.

With 80 lb. braid, at the end of a long cast (120') the IPT of a 300 vs. 400 is roughly 33 vs. 34.3. Not a huge difference IMO. If you were bombing out past 150', then it starts to make a bigger difference (>2 IPT), but for typical long casts, it's pretty close. If you use 100 lb braid, there is also a larger difference at the end of the cast.

Pretty sure I've read a Shimano rep state the 300 should outcast the 400 slightly. Overall, it seems pretty close between the two- 300 is a tiny bit lighter, little smaller, $20 cheaper, loses a little pick up at the end of the cast, casts a little further.

I've been looking at both, and have all but decided I'd pick up the 400. Big difference in line cap for small difference in weight. Still using my Lexa 400, and just got another for jigging. I like the smaller weight and size of the Tranx, but would opt for the 400 as the line cap means it could double duty trolling or jigging in a pinch.

Having held (but not casted) both I would just say that the 300 does feel a little smaller in my hand and I've got good sized paws. So if you're a palmer with big mitts I'd suggest that the 400 is going to feel a little more comfy. For smaller hands or if you just like the idea of the smaller size reel or $20.00 difference the 300 will hold plenty of line. If you can't cast either of these reels as far as you want...the boat moves too you know

I'm getting a 300 to put on a medium heavy 8'6". I have small hands and really look forward to the size and the lower gear ratio as compared to the 300ej.

Resize it using pixel count to 640X480, and it won't look 'goofy'.

This is what happens when I resize to 640 wide maintaining the aspect ratio. Thin lines are not handled well when sizing down jpgs.
