Ok gentlemen. Brand new to the whole boat game but picked up two gen 1 helix 7's brand new in box for 600, one even has the navionics chip included! One is a side image & gps, the other a sonar & gps. My plans are to have the sonar at the console and side image at the bow by my trolling motor. My question is: now what the heck do I do and more importantly, what else do I need? I'm guessing a transom transducer for the sonar and a side image transducer mounted on the trolling motor, cables to connect everything, anything else? Also I only have 2 battery's right now for the trolling motor (70lb thrust minnkota edge) and electric starter but will i need to grab another battery, dedicate 2 to the trolling motor alone and one to the starter and electronics? Please take it easy, I'm brand new to this and am working on my own interpretations from previous threads. I'm probably mistaken, looking forward to hearing from you guys! Thanks.

id start with the si ducer on the transom and the steering wheel. its easier to learn at 4 mph without any distortion from steering and the 2d on trolling motor/bow unit

I would do the same. SI/GPS at the console and Sonar/GPS at the bow. You will mount the SI transducer at the transom and the skimmer transducer on the trolling motor. If the two batteries you have are both deep cycle use those for the trolling motor and get a deep cycle cranking battery (dual) as the starting battery for the outboard and for electronics.

Thank you both, I am glad that I have you guys! I will take your suggestions regarding the mounting of the units and ducers. The batteries are deep cell. I would like to invest in an on board charger, I have two single banks (minnkota 110d?) But with the additional battery, should I get a three bank on board charger? Also, what kind of mounting options are there for the birds? I'm assuming a surface mount for the console and some kind of mount which attaches to the floor for the bow? I may have understated the whole newbie part haha my boat is a new to me 1974 Crestliner AMF by the way. I hope I'm not asking too much. I found a couple people on this forum from my neck of the woods and with the spring looking like it's finally here to stay, I'm hoping they would be interested in teaching me the ropes. In the meantime, I would really like to get a handle on everything in this boat before purchasing a nicer vessel. I'm hoping investing in the equipment that can be switch over right now is a better investment since I'm fresh to all of this and haven't learned much yet.

The 330d is what I was looking at. Good to have confirmation. I am located like 10 minutes north of Pittsburgh bud.

Check out the ram mount web site for your birds. If you go that route, your birds aren't the biggest, but they're not the smallest either. You would want to select a ball size large enough to not have the units move on you. Also, agree with the others that the SI unit at the console is the right idea.

Yes, I would've rather bought 9's but for 600 including the north American navionics chip in one, I couldn't pass it up. I will look into the ram mounts, thank you. And fishy Sam, if I ever make a Midwest road trip like I am planning, I will definitely let you know!

Another question, at the store and there is a minnkota 315d for 150 right now. Would 5 amps per bank be enough juice for all three batteries on the charge? I'd prefer the 330d but if this would suffice then I'd like to save money. I fish a lot but nowhere near as much as I'd like to. About 400 hours per year with most of that being back to back days, Saturday and Sunday. I'm guessing the 5 amps per bank would not be enough for a full charge after a full day of fishing followed by another round the following day? Correct me if I'm wrong, but my calcs are around 6hrs for a full charge on each wet flooded battery with a ten amp per bank 3 bank charger?

Long hard days in the wind on my 36v troller and 330d 6-7 hours didn't quite top them off but did a sufficient job. Less wind or 8-9 hours on the charger you'll be ok. For sure but if you go sun up to sun down sat and Sunday regardless of wind you want a 10amp.

http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=11... From down below as far as I can tell looking at the charger and there website it looks like a 3 bank 45 amp charger. At a fair price used but reviews are generally high on this company.

What bites is I ordered a 330d and got home to see that post man haha I would've gladly taken it! I appreciate the insight on charging time too bud. 5 amps just wasn't enough on my calcs and 15 amps was a bit pricey for new so 10 amps was the happy medium. Only paid 200 for the 330d too. Good to have friends that work our kind of retail!

Rebates are available on chargers right now via Minn Kota: http://www.minnkotamotors.com/promotions/

2X on a 3 bank charger. Always good to make sure there is a full charge on that all-important cranking battery!
