I searched online and couldn't find whether there are any procedures for taking my boat to MN or IL. I know MN had talked about an AIS permit, but it didn't pass. Was anything else put in place there? Anything similar in IL? Thanks.

Just follow all current AIS laws for your boat in MN, nothing else is necessary. Plug out, drain, no vegetation on your boat. If you use live bait and want to keep what you don't use, leave a jug of spare water in a cooler in your truck and exchange the water when you return to shore.

You don't need any stickers or anything else. When you buy a fishing license you will sign an extra form affirming that you understand and will follow the state's AIS laws. You can read more about our laws on Minnesota's revisor page, just google MN statute 84d.105. Any more questions just let me know.

Thanks Pointer. I remember signing the sticker last year.

The big one that most people forget is the bait rule. If it was used or touched lake water you cannot transfer it. If you plan on keeping bait you must have a cooler or similar with fresh water NOT from the lake and NO water in your livewell is allowed to be transferred. Even if you flush your livewell and put well water in there that's illegal.

Some IL waters have their own rules, e.g. the Fox Chain. Should you choose to launch your boat there you'll need to secure a use sticker which, depending on the size of your boat, will set you back about $140

The Fox Chain Waterway sticker is currently $50 annually for a 17' or under.

It's $100 annually for 25' or under. $80 last year.

A daily use permit is $20 for 25' or under.

Check out the link below.

The Fox Waterway user fee has nothing to do with AIS. The annual fee (2016 rates) for a boat powered with more than 15 hp and less than 25' in length will cost $100. The daily fee is $20 and a 10 day permit costs $55

"OUT OF STATE FEE – A class fee plus $40.00 per permit will be charged for boats registered out of the State of Illinois. One day and ten day permits are exempt. Proof of State registration may be required"

Good info on the daily/short term permits though. The last time I was on these waters those permits didn't exist.

Typical Illinois!
I guess taxes aren't high enough, either are the tolls!
I guess this goes into the "slush fund" too.
