Posts: 72 | I've been musky fishing for about a year, so I'm pretty ignorant, and I want to buy a new combo. Currently, I have a Long Ranger with a Revo Beast HS 60 and Big Nasty with a Tranx PG 500. For my third combo, I think my best bet is to get something that can throw heavy baits and pick up line quickly. So I was thinking of getting a custom 9'6" rod that's similar in power/action to a Big Dawg. For a reel, I'd use a high speed Tranx 400 or 500. I'd use it for gliders, jerk baits, mag dawgs (with the occasional pounder), and burning big blades. My goal is to do as much as possible with as few rods as possible. I'm trying to avoid my bass rod situation, where I have something like 12 different combos. Just wondering if my rod/reel selection makes sense. Thanks.

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | Sounds like you've got it down. If you are going to throw bigger baits I personally would go with the tranx 500. I'm sure the 400 could handle but I think the 500 could do better. With that being said I've never used or even held a 400 so I'm going off what I heard. Just my opinion.

Posts: 770 | Gliders on a 9' rod is going to be a nightmare (would for me anyway) i throw gliders on a 7'6 rod. Easy to mauever .for pulls and twitches

Posts: 770 | I run 3 combos, one for lighter smaller baits, one for gliders WTD topwaters and jerkbaits, and one for heafier bucktails and big blades. Now i dont have a rod that handles mag dawgs and pounders very well thats coming in the future. But like i stated above if i was going to buy a combo for jerkbaits and gliders it would be a short rod.

Posts: 735 Location: Apparently where the Muskie aren't | I didn't notice you mentioned gliders. I see where T3clay is coming from but, I do think it could be done on a 9'6" rod with ease even though people typically use a shorter rod. You could just work the bait to the side instead of down. I actually just bought a custom 8'9" that I plan to throw gliders on, and that will be the shortest rod I own, next one I plan on going over 10'. I think it's all about using what your comfortable with.

Posts: 770 | Long rods are very nice and if you can get used to it for jerks and gliders more power too ya, im only 5'7" i just cant make it work.....

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I started with two very similar setups and settled on 4 combos total because I couldn't make the same rod/reel work for Mag blades/rubber and jerkbaits. I got one combo for jerks and a separate one for rubber/10's

Posts: 72 | Because of an old wrist injury, I jerk to the side instead of down, so long rods don't bother me. Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Posts: 239 Location: Madison, WI | If i were in your situation i'd trade out the Long ranger for a LT "the Jerk". then you'd have The jerk/Beast HS Big Nasty/tranx pg then for the 3rd combo If you have an extra grand to drop i would probably go with a 9'8" predator XH with a tranx 500HG on it.

Posts: 770 | I have a bulldawg rod 8'6" i believe its MH but itnis their bucktail rod. With a toro S and that is a SWEET combo... my next will probably be a bulldagw SUPERMAGNUM 8'6" for pounders and mag dawgs. Probably use a 6500 C3 garcia reel
