Has anyone ever tried trolling a Lake X Cannonball? If so, what were your results? I read a very interesting article on trolling surface lures at night over open water. The Cannonball seems like an ideal bait for doing something like this.

I've heard about doing that as well. Wether it works or not I don't know. But it sounds like it would be effective. And I can only imagine how cool a topwater trolling strike would look (if you can see it in the dark).

Wonder what the speed would be for this? I would think you would have to slow a lil than normal troll speeds for musky

Why not just test it? Shouldn't be hard to establish a top end speed where the bait still works. Then vary speed until the fish provide clues. I wouldn't be surprised if slower is better for a bait like a Lake X, but only the fish know for sure.

I trolled buzzbaits in munuskong bay on the st Mary's river one afternoon and filmed for a few hours. One thing that's nice about it is it was 10 feet of water with thick weeds 8+ feet up. Not many lure choices to stay that shallow. Nothing happened but no reason it shouldn't work.

Trolling toppers works. If using toppers at night, the key is to run the bait as slow as it can but still function. In a cannonballs case, run as slow as it can but still gives the plop sound they are known for. Giant sized pacemakers are good at night.

An old guy in Canada told me about trolling topwaters 15 years ago after I asked how he caught so many big fish. Never gave it a second thought until now

All very good advice. I'm very eager to try this. I have to cross a bay, usually at night, to get back to my cabin. This bay is enormous, extremely deep, and doesn't have a ton of structure. What it does have are tons of Whitefish and Cisco. I'm going to troll my way across that bay on my way home one night and see if I can't put something together. It sounds like you've done this before. How much line do you generally let out. I'm assuming that any trolling rig or even the rod you use to cast with would suffice for this.

Backtroll. You might as well watch your bait get crushed.
