I'm heading down to Playa Del Carmen the first week of March and I'm hoping to get some fishing in. Ive never been there and have no idea what to expect. Any advice for those of you that have fished down there? Would it be worth bringing some sort of fishing pole and a few lures to do some shore fishing? I'd also like to book a charter for a day. Any recomendations on a captain?

Thanks in advance

Joe

Just a heads up you posted in the wrong forum so this thread will likely be moved to the fishing reports and destinations area of the site so you don't wonder where it went

I would say it sort of depends on what you want to catch? Do you want to just fish from shore, fish reefs for grouper/AJ, or troll for sailfish/mahi?

Shore fishing, you can probably catch small snapper, jacks and barracuda's just tossing metal and jigs. Depending on your resort and where you are staying, some don't let you venture off their property along the beach so you can be kind of limited on locations to fish. I've seen a few small bonefish/permit near the resorts, but usually pretty small.

If you are staying right in downtown playa, go down to the beach and there are panga's that can take you out. look for the guys that have decent equipment, those are usually the guys that are running more trips/know what they are doing. I think last time i went out on a panga was about 4 years ago and we got about 4 hours for like $250.

if you want to target something more desirable, like Tarpon, bonefish, or Permit, probably going to need to travel north or south of the cancun/playa area. There are some national parks/fishing operations out of those places. If you want to go this route, look up Boca Paila.

went last year. i'd say 75% of the shoreline had nets 100' out.

I fished with these guys once, Rick used to be a charter captain in Port Clinton, nice guy. https://www.captricksfishing.com/

Sailfish were out of migration path season but we went out and caught fish bottom fishing and caught a baracuda trolling. We only did a half day, had fun for first time fishing salt.

I also used captain ricks out of the riveria maya. Two separate trips actually. Caught several Mahi and a nice 100 lb white marlin and a few small tuna. I only trolled bc I wanted mahi. I did full day on 28' boat for like $450.

I'm just south of playa as I write this. Tried to take my 4 year old son out deep see fishing, didn't work out to well. That said the guys at the rusty hook were really good tho.... Offered to take me back to my resort by boat instead of taking us back to where we met them. Shore fishing has been pretty slow. I have been throwing sone small rapalas without much success. A met another guy who was using a bobber and calamari from the buffet and he was catching some small fish. But yesterday we went to a dolphin swim and there was a estuary with a harbour it was connected to. There were alot of tarpon swimming around. I'd say 40-45".....sure could be fun if yiu could find a place like that to fish. I asked if I could fish there and was told no. But maybe if you did some research you could figure something out. This place is pretty awesome!

And I'm not 100% sure they were tarpon. I'm from Canada and have only seen tarpon on fishing shows. If they they weren't tarpon they looked very similar.
