What are some cranks/twitchbaits that work well running real shallow? Something that can be worked effectively in 2-4' deep sand/gravel areas with sparse weeds, preferably with some speed. Some ideas so far:

Big Game 8" surface twitch - works pretty good for this. Not great in weeds, durability problems contacting rocks, relatively expensive to be routinely breaking.

Shallow Invader - works good, probably best I've used so far, may try adjusting balance slightly rearward to keep right under the surface.

Mag Shallow Invader - haven't tried one, does it run shallow enough?

Super Shad Rap - good candidate but haven't tried it, panfish profile makes sense

DD - runs too deep, not great with weeds

Believer - straight model runs too deep but good with weeds, jointed on shallow eye more of a topwater, may try adding a little weight to run right below surface. Both have a lower frequency wobble than the above options and aren't great with speed on shallow eye.

Perhaps the ShallowRaider series by Bucker they only run a 2 ~ 4 feet deep. You can also help control the depth how deep any crankbait runs by how much you initially crank it down and the position of your rod tip to the water while working the bait. Lighter line runs deeper as well.

I like Crane baits a lot for shallow twitching. They run 1-2 feet even if you work them aggressively.

Check out the savage gear koolie minnow which was on sale on overstockbait a couple days ago. Very erratic. Dont let the lip fool you, its not diving.

Agree 100% lol.

But I would have to say shallow raider, and also shallow invader. Maybe slammer 7" but there so #*^@ lite!!!

Most of your super shallow runners will be made of balsa which means they are not going to be durable. I love the ss shads but you will not get many fish out of one before it is tore up. Same think with cranes. I just started using the 7 inch slammer and like it so far.

Cranes and Slammers. Thumbs up.

Surface twitch will cover that portion of water but haven't had any success on one yet. Shallow Invaders are great but I like them in 6' or more.

SS shad has a very nice action with the tail, but it's hard to beat the erratic wobble of the time tested Crane.

Crane baits for sure and for speed reeling, try the jtd crane bait. Ultra shallow presentation.

It is interesting someone brought up the vexer. I've been wondering about that bait. Any other success stories about that bait?

I've been wondering about the Vexer too. It doesn't seem to have taken off - there isn't much feedback out there, but you do see a few floating around for sale here and there. As far as I can tell it's no longer on the Drifter website, so they may have pulled the plug. In any case, seems like a bait worth trying out if it runs shallow enough.
