I am looking for advice to fish a small clear lake. I know it has state record smallmouth and some giant musky. The lake is like 20acres or so and has a 15ft max depth. The forage that i know of is rainbow trout and crappie and bluegill. I have seen 2 musky swimming and have heard of a couple that were seen over 50in including one that was 53in found dead by the DNR. I want to wait till the fishing pressure lets down but I want to fish it before they do the annual fall stocking of rainbows. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do?

Thanks,
Jake

i seem to get follows when my home lake is clear with plastics such as fin s fish... maybe try some trout pattern plastics like the storm wildeye plastic shads or those castaic trouts... fin s fish prolly has rainbow colors also... hmm, i got a rainbow trout pattern flatfish i never throw...? also a small reef hawg in crappie would be on one of my rods if i were fishing that lake.

I would fish every square inch of that water two or three different presentations every time there. A lake that size is pretty easy to cover really well. Try VERY early AM and late PM because of the clear water. If there is any cover there, hit that hard.

I fish a similar lake close to my house that is about 26 acres, and the forage is crappies mainly. After a few seasons of beating the shoreline weeds with very little to show but a slow lazy follow I decided to locate the crappies and cast around them. Bingo! The crappies are usually suspended over the deepest part of the lake during the summer and early fall, which is about 22', and a Little Ernie, Slammer Deep diver, or similar crank works well if they are deep, otherwise I like the Big Game Tackle and small Jake minnowbaits if the fish are higher in the water column. Fire tiger has been my most productive color.

Good luck!
