I live a half hour drive from the Bay of Green Bay and would rather catch 45" fish from the smaller lakes and reservoirs with beautiful scenery than spend time on the bay chasing 50's.

Hmm.. I like a little of both, but if I were presented the above scenario - I'd be fishing GB 90% of the time - with a week or two in Ontario

Zib - 1/3/2017 2:48 PM I'll take a nice lake up north without the shoreline lined with houses & no drunken pleasure boaters over fishing LSC any day of the week. Fishing LSC every weekend is getting old. I'm sick of the increased musky fishing pressure & getting buzzed by the pleasure boats.
Gotta love youtube channels and gopros

Plus the 6+ fishing shows that have shot multiple episodes doesn't help either. Add to it the dozens of new guides that have popped up overnight & the out-of-state guides coming here because they can't put their clients on fish in their own home waters. It has made me seriously think about giving up musky fishing. This just might be the 2nd year in a row that I go without buying new musky lures.

Give it a couple years Zib. Lakes boom and taper off all the time. I'm not saying it will ever be as quiet out there as it once was but it might come close eventually. When a lake lights up like LSC did it'll obviously draw the crowd and the guides and after they pound it the fishing will get tougher and eventually they will move to the next hot bite. Many of the guides on LSC are on their 3rd or 4th lake change. Five years from now you might be wondering where the heck everybody went.

As to the original question I like it all. I miss the Canadian Shield and fantasize about little remote northwoods lakes but more often then not choose developed moderate fishing pressure lakes that hold BIG fish. I like knowing I have the shot at a giant. The only thing I'm over is high fishing pressure. I've shared enough weed lines with 10+ other boats in my fishing life to make me intentionally try to avoid that. In my mind fewer fish with far less fishing pressure gives me the same odds at connecting without the headaches haha.

Playing bumper boats seems to be the norm once the word gets out on a good bite whether it be LSC, Green Bay, or lakes like Vermillion back in the day… nothing that good is going to last. In many respects I think the sport has evolved from doing your own research and hunting them, to chasing the hot bite.

I can understand what DRPEPIN is saying about not wanting to fish Green Bay because as soon as the word gets out on a fresh bite there will be 30-50 boats on it the next day… our military needs to take lessons in deployment. Now I certainly don't blame people for jumping on a hot bite, but playing bumper boats is pretty far from what I'm looking for in an outdoor experience. I’m more into the hunting/exploring part of it these days, but still willing put up with bad scenery and smelly paper mills as long as I can hunt big fish without feeling like I'm in line at a McDonald's drive-through

Agree with a few before... Big fish in crappy scenery can be OK, I can eventually forget about the surroundings. Big fish in crappy scenery with a bunch of other boats isn't what I'm looking for.

Of course, there's no right or wrong answer to this question. I put myself in the big fish camp. I'm lucky enough to live about 1 hour from Green Bay. Still in the learning phase for out there. It is true that pressure can be very real at peak times, both casting and trolling. I'm lucky, because of my job, that I can fish it during the week. Will fish it on weekends outside of peak times though. The wind is a bigger pain for me. I can work around the fishing pressure part. Been blown off more times than I can remember. I've had action on days without another musky boat in sight, but yeah, when word gets out, it gets out real fast. I still enjoy going "up north" and LOTW for a change of pace though. Tom

Pretty much this. I don't mind a few boats out there chucking baits but I like to fish an entire spot without having to go around other boats. I'd rather have unpressured fish with a chance at a nice one than playing the odds of catching a state record. I can live with metro scenery during the week but if I'm making a trip out of it the scenery definitely comes in to play. Eagle Lake has definitely become my favorite, even though I've seen bigger fish much closer to home than I have found there.

I've thought about this a lot as a muskie noob who is putting in a lot of time and effort into learning/improving as a muskie fisherman. I fish Lake Monona on the Madison chain 95% of the time and im not sure if learning on such a pressured lake will make me better by requiring me to REALLY hone my skills, or delay improvement because of fewer fish interactions? Definitely planning on fishing other lakes in the chain more this coming season

The cabin is in a very scenic location on more of a "numbers" lake that yields a 50 or three every season. My biggest there thus far is a 48, but the fact that I can start/stop/restart/quit anytime I want and put the boat on the lift and go indoors and crack a beer trumps chances at a mid 50s fish for me. There are lakes nearby that provide better chances at 50s, and a 30 minute drive will get me there. In the meantime, give me the comforts of home and some idyllic time on the water and I'm happy.
