Hi everyone. Appreciate the interesting info here. Me and a buddy decided to give Muskies a try this year (having never done so) so I'm trying to soak up some info. I've pulled in a 32 incher and a 34.5 Tiger (both on bucktails) so far and have thoroughly enjoyed it ! We were thinking of hiring a guide for half a day to try to speed up the learning process and have a couple questions. We thought we'd try somewhere a little north of Minneapolis/St Paul like East/West Rush lake or maybe even Mille Lacs (we're open to suggestions). How much $ is guide service (2 people plus guide in boat) ? Is it cheaper during week days ? Is evening best (I caught both of mine between 19:30-20:00) ? What tackle (if any) does the guide provide ? Thanks for any input. jeff...

Hi Jeff, Most guides provide all the tackle you will need for a days outing, you might want to bring along a camera, rain gear and food, some guides require you to take them to lunch and some just ask if you want to go to lunch or stay on the water and eat. There is also the all time favorite that we like to do for our clients, and that is the shore lunch. It gives them a break and allows them to relax and enjoy the surroundings a little more. Other than that the guide should provide everything else. As far as price goes it depends on the guide, how long you want to go out, and the number of people in your party. The average price for a full day (8 hour) trip for two people should be approximatly $200.00 to $300.00

Better deal to spring for a full day. Most services will run from $200(low side) to $350. They should always include tackle for you and your buddy and if you have your own, the guide should be able to provide and instruct you on many different and effective baits, widening your knowledge and equipment quickly. You will probably want to provide your own rain gear(guide will have some but it might be crummy). Lunch is individual thing with the guide. Be prepared to pay for the guides lunch and your own, but he may provide lunch as part of the service. A guide on a lake that is near enough for you to fish fairly often and is a lake that has diversified water environment is probably the best bet because it will offer the best results in terms of familiarity and being able to generalize your knowledge from that body of water to other similar situations you encounter as you continue to fish. Very unusual bodies of water may require specialized techniques that are not useful over a wide range of waters(ie don't go to a crystal clear deepwater lake, or a very very shallow darkwater lake on your day with the guide).
