I have a cousin who lives in Michigan near Muskegan and he has been looking for a lake for me to fish when I go visit him. The only lake around him that has Muskies is Hamlin Lake in Ludington. It's a 5,000 acre lake and borders lake Michigan. Has anyone or does anyone fish this lake? Is there a decent population?

If not Hamlin is there another lake close by which is better?

Any help would be appreciated greatly!

MuskyPippo,
I live an hour north of Hamlin, it does have muskies but a very small population. As you may know there are only a few lakes in the northern lower penninsula of Michigan that they plant muskies. You may be better off heading south of Muskegon to one of the lakes that have a better fish/acre ratio. Campeau, Murray, Budd, Thornapple. Check out the Michigan Muskie Alliance web site, go to the forum ask Will Shultz or Kingfisher they fish those high number waters. You can also email me and I'll try to help you out if I can.

I know lots of folks might dissagree with me but I would steer him away from Hudson for sure. I really never gave it a fair chance but did give it about ten solid hours of casting an entire musky bait shop on day this year. 2 guys, 10 hrs, dozens of lures, lots of swearing, 2 birdsnests, and a sunburn...the pic attached was the only fish we saw all day.

Hudson can be tough, especially in the summer... I think you are pretty lucky to have caught what you did...LOL

I would suggest Thornapple, it is about an hour and half east of Hamlin. The lake is where the new state record came from close to 50 lbs. The lake has a good population but is a little tough due to murky water, but there is always a chance for a trophy. Another lake southeast is Bankson near Lawton Mi., it is a small lake known for it's numbers, fish over 40 inches are very rare most fish in the 32 to 36 inch range. God bless, Al

Be ready for tough fishing if you head to bankson. Between me and three friends we easily have 250 hours on Bankson this year, and not even a hookup yet. We've been getting follows regularly, but no takers. Lots of the other guys that fish it regularly havent been catching them as well either. And the last two to three weeks have been hell on Bankson as far as traffic goes.

Campau is a good numbers lake, but traffic is hell there also.

Thornapple isnt quite as crowded as campau/bankson generally, but more of the boats there are pounding the 'skies. There are some big ones in there, and people seem to be doing as good on thornapple as any other lake in the southern lower (lake st clair doesnt count).

Lots of southwest michigan reports on my website too, but you have to register to read them

2 big Fish were Speared in Hamlin this winter. I fish there evey fall for bass and talked to a bunch of guys about muskie. They used to be there but now they are few and far between. Hudson is a tough lake but there are some tricks to it. Summer is really tough.
