As mentioned already, there are so many variables. Simply put if you're always fishing at the same speed you're going to miss out on a lot of opportunities.

As Brad Nelson said, there are truly too many variables to say one true and correct speed. If it is summer and the fish are on a speed bucktail bite, I cover as much ground as possible, as fast 1.2-1.4.... in the LATE fall, I may fish only 5 spots, running suckers on the bottom, at .3-.4.... I let the fish tell me... but then again, it is only my 2 cents worth.

The comment about the salmon pulling a muskie tail to tail, you are probably right.... BUT, my muskie will bite the salmons nuts off before he could swim away!!!!
