I bought a new boat trailer and it has a 5 pin flat wiring connected my truck adapter only has 4. I think the 5th pin is for electric release of surge brakes. The trailer doesn't have brakes. Can this pin be left exposed or do I need a new adapter?

Just check the lights make sure the function correctly. Also my sales man said if you need to back up "a hill" with a flat four flip the connector backwards and something like a blinker or tail light will release the brakes.

Back-up light wire to the 5th wire on the plug. If the trailer is braked you need the 5 pin truck adapter or a seperate wire to the fifth pin to disengage the brakes going backwards up a hill or against any slight resistance backing up.

Do not know why a new trailer with a 5 wire plug would NOT have brakes! Sounds like it should have surge brakes. 5th wire needs to be hooked up to the back-up lights of the tow vehicle to back up. My trailer has a 5 flat on it too!

Just go buy a adapter for a 5 pin they don't cost that much.
