Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Seems to be 2 different models of rod holders from Scotty.....which one do I need, the base model, or the powerlocks?

Location: Kawarthas, Ontario | You want the model called the Striker. It is the one with the extended stainless forearms and the cradle. These things are incredibly strong, and take much of the pressure off the reel seat area of the rod.

I have 7 of the Scotty Power Locks on my boat. A couple of reasons is the width of the holder is perfect for rods with a thicker handle so it's much easier to get the rod out of the holder. Also the base model is pretty small and doesn't look sturdy enough.
Only reason I have 7 is because one of my rodholders is the R.A.M with the raised mount on it to fit between my main engine and kicker.

Location: Davenport, IA | I agree that the scotties are not good rod holders for muskie fishing. I have 2 of them and both have been ruined. Same with the berkley rod holders. I am going to get some down easters. |

I have beaten my scotty's to death, they are great. You know I troll hard hours and have never had one of mine fail on over 40 fish. I did however snag into a St. Croix Musky combo while I was trolling, the main item weighting it down was a broken down-east holder. Haven't had that happen with one of my scottys. As long as you buy the bigger series you will be fine. I can't say I have ever used down-east and the only reason is because I have never had a reason to switch from the Scotty's.
