After I get my hooks sticky sharp sometimes the point sometimes rolls over or breaks after hitting a snag or after removing it from the well embedded jaws of a toothy critter. This leaves the treble with a pointless hook. Anybody else ever experience this phenomenon? Most of my trebles are made from perma steel.

Thanks

We fish a lot of rocks up in Canada. Pretty safe bet that after you set the hook on anything (i.e. a rock) that point will be gone. I found that I was taking way too much metal off my hooks when sharpening them. These days I focus more on just the point and touch up often instead of shaving the entire tapered point of the hook if that makes sense.

PUsh file towards hook

NOT, Away from hook. THis will keep from getting a burr at the tip, which tip of hook bends over after coming In Contact with objects.

I sharpen my hooks pushing the file towards the barb, NOT, towards the tip of the hook. THis will keep from getting a burr at the tip, which bends over easier after coming In Contact with objects.

I do sharpen my hooks by pushing the file against the barb (not the point). Thank you anyways.

Jim, change to a diff. hook supplier. sounds like they have too soft a steel. Try Mustads or better yet Gamakatsu's or anything else.
