Hello All,
I heard from my Marina in northwest central Wisconsin that Canada is thinking about not allowing 2 stroke motors into Canada within the next 3 years. I know California has this now - no 2 stroke motors. I believe it will come to Wisconsin some day. Only 4 stroke motors will be allowed on all lakes.
Thank You,
Randy

I know as of 2006 you won't be able to buy a 2 stroke in Canada. But I don't think they will outlaw the 2 strokes, hopefully they will give them a few years to switch to enviromently friendlyer motors.

I think that would be a good idea to eventually ban 2-strokes. The prices of new motors are getting pretty close, so I don't see anyone buying two strokes in a few years. They also are getting lower in weight.

I dont' think it would be good to suddenly ban them though, (3 years is short notice)

I have seen or heard nothing on this. Merc is still pumping out its 2-stroke Opti-Max engines, while OMC has their Ficht 2-strokes. Only the overseas manufacturers are totally going 4-stroke in all engine sizes.

Two strokes still outnumber 4-strokes about 5 to 1 in Canada. There is no way in the short term that any political party is going to vote this is in... it would be political suicide. Numerous guides and resorts would be hit with massive unexpected costs to replace equipment, and would likely go under - especially in outlying areas. Also, there are jurisdictional issues involved, as our federal and provincial governments have split responsibilities on different waterbodies. I think that there may come a point when this will happen, but it will likely be at least 5 years after the year when they cease selling 2-strokes... and we aren't there yet.

Steve, what about the 2006 EPA Standard? Maybe the optimax and fitch pass but all other 2 stroke will not be sold in Canada as of 2006. You have to remember they use 45% less fuel and therefore are 45% less poluting then a regular 2 stroke.

BTW new engines purchased are 5 to 1 four stroke vs two. Well if anyone does any kind of research should know about the 2006 EPA and avoid the purchase of a regular 2 stroke engine.

I know my Optimax does pass the California emissions standard. So does the Ficht & HPDI Yamahas.

I just can't see them not grandfathering people who already have 2 strokes. There would be a huge plunge in money coming into the country. Whether 2 or 4 stroke that doesn't matter, emissions is what is important. There will always be a need for 2 and 4 stroke engines.

The Opti Max technology has the 6 cylinder outboards running cleaner than some of the 4 strokes. Direct injection works well, and is pretty green, too.If the Government wants to limit 'dirty motors', they would target the oil injected carb units. 2006 is the target year for the builders to meet stringent EPA guidelines, which the Opti Max now meets.

Watch in the future for Mercury Marine's NEW 'X Technology',

I'm all for cleaner running engines, but what are we supposed to do with our old ones? Is the EPA going to give us $100 a horsepower credit when they ban our motors?
It seems so ironic and so usual that we'll have to fork our more cash for cleaner waters while the power plants on the lakeshores and riverbanks still burn tons of coal and pollute our water and air.
I'll do what I have to because I love the outdoors and want to preserve them for my daughter and your kids and grandkids, but the middleclass is taking it in the netherlands again.

Beaver, they did not come out with the 2006 EPA regulations last week, They gave everyone over 6 years ( not sure exacly when) to faze out the dirty 2 strokes. Now if someone went out and bought one during that time well thats his problem for not seeing that the sales is motor will be banned ofter 2006. I believe there is going to be a certain time or grandmother claws that will let the folks with the dirty 2 strokes have some time to get with the new technology.

Richard, I know it's coming and have known for as long as the rest of the gang around here. I'm just trying to find a way to subtley tell my wife....."Becky, we have to spend 5 grand on a new motor."
I better start saving now.
I wonder what they'll do with all the old ones?
2 years ago I tried to trade my 75 2-stroke in and they wouldn't take it. Didn't want it. What will become of all those old outboards?

It will be OK to run the 2 strokes until they puke in the USA, much like the older autos. The regulations cover new sales in most states here, not the existence of old technology out there.
