Leaving for Sandy's Blackhawk Lodge in the Northwest Angle, first trip there.  All you Canada journeyman out there I'm looking for some tips.

•Things you wish you would have brought, but didn't.

•First week in July baits, sizes and colors.

•Things to watch out for

•Will a Fishing Hot Spots map be ok for navagation

•Will there be a bloom to deal with

Thanks, my 2 boys and I appreciate any suggestions.

I would fish weeds at this time of the year. Jackpots, Marv's spinnerbaits. Another thing I found that works this time of the year is Reed Runner Spinnerbaits I think in 1/2 ounce size crawdad with cooperblades. Fish this near some rocks and you are going to catch some nice smallmouth. Don't let the size fool you I have caught my third largest on this bait 50 1/2 inches est. 35 lbs. God bless, Al

BigO! You're gonna have a great time! Here is my 2 cents worth.

•Things you wish you would have brought, but didn't. More Beer!

•First week in July baits, sizes and colors. I would not go to Canada without my Sucker Reef Hawg, Ghost Tail(Black w/Chart & Orange), Orange, Lime Green, or FireTiger Suicks.

•Things to watch out for. Hidden Reefs!

•Will a Fishing Hot Spots map be ok for navagation. I recommend MNR Map. It's bigger and has more detail then the HotSpots map.

•Will there be a bloom to deal with. Doubtfull you'll see much of a bloom.

My tip for you is find Reeds and Rocks, or Weeds and ROcks. All three is the best!

Tell us all about it when you get back. Have a great trip!

Hiya BigO,

Couple thoughts:

You should by all means buy the Canadian Hydro Survey charts. A FHS map IS NOT adequate for navigation, especially with this year's low water. They're fine for showing you general fishing areas, but they don't have nearly the resolution to navigate with. A reef that shows up perfectly clearly on the Canadian maps can be a pinprick dot on the FHS map. In addition, last summer the Canadians re-did the routes and buoys on the lake (they have routes marked with buoys for the barge traffic on the lake) They re-marked the routes, eliminated some secondary tracks and removed the buoys, and renumbered the rest of the buoys. The FHS maps aren't updated with the new routes, and looking at buoys that aren't on the map or for buoys that are on the map but have been removed can make you think you're lost when you're not.

The Canadion Hydro chart you want is no. 6216, and you can pick one up on the way, order one from Thorne Bros, or most likely get one at Young's Bay where you'll launch your boat to get to Billy's place.
