I've said it before: you meet the most accomplished idiots at a boat launch. As long as YOU'RE not trying to launch or retrieve, it's great entertainment!

Posts: 1307 Location: E. Tenn | Pulled into the lot at a local boat ramp, and got everything ready to go... Two other guys showed up, got in line, and started getting their rigs ready to launch.. All of a sudden this whiz bang drives right by, backs down the middle of the ramp, and proceeds to load his crap in his boat, along with Maw, the kid, Grandpa, and a truckful of stuff.. He then proceeds to grind on the starter for several minutes, before realizing the motor wouldn't start. He then pulls up a bit, unloads the family, and decides to try some redneck engineering right there.. After watching this debacle for twenty minutes, one of the other guys asked him how much longer he'd be, and got a bunch of attitude.. We decided it wasn't worth the trouble and went to another ramp.. Going by 25 min. later, he was still blocking the ramp.. Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 793 Location: Ames, Iowa | If it's just me I don't go to busy ramps. Funniest ramp experience was at Little Wall Lake near Jewell, Iowa. Mom, dad in chairs having a snack on the dock watching the plump kiddies in the ramp wading/swimming. I told the kids "you'll want to get out of there", and proceeded to back down. Mom wasn't happy I left the boat at the end of the dock with the 2 stroke Evinrude smokin the place up. I'd like to think this happens only in Iowa but I'll bet it's more common than I know.

Posts: 548 Location: MN | Then there's the ramps with folks fishing from the dock that get mad when they have to reel in while you unload your boat. And of course there is a designated fishing dock about 50 yds away. Edited by Nick59 6/6/2016 6:46 AM

Posts: 409 Location: Almond, WI | I was at a river boat launch a couple years back. Normally it's two lanes with a dock in the middle dividing the lanes, but they pulled the dock because of recent high water/flow and hadn't replaced it yet. This guy backed his truck into the middle of the launch, jackknifed his trailer to the left, and ran out of gas. Just in time for the afterwork rush at 5:30pm.

I've seen a lot of boat ramp humor over the years however the Kinkaid ramp on a summer Saturday or Sunday night has got to rank up there as one of the most consistent places for a good laugh. I've see where the cops sit at the ramp looking for a easy dui. that's almost cheating.

Posts: 548 Location: MN | I was at a ramp on the St. Croix unloaded boat, moved it to the non ramp side out of the way and went to park. Was by my self. Came back and a family of four was fishing off end of dock using my boat as a storage shelf. Tackle boxes, cooler, and rods. Worst of all mom was smoking right over the gas cap with 22 gallons underneath tying on a hook. Not a pleasant situation.... for them.

Posts: 1209 | As a child I fished of the boat ramp docks. If it wasn't a "busy period". I offered to hold boats some people let me some didn't, it's all good. Most people apologized for power loading but I knew that only made he walleyes hammer down on food. So after they didn't have any luck I would drop my jig in there propwash and nail an eye or two in front of them. But not before or after they were gone.

Posts: 793 Location: Ames, Iowa | I was at a ramp on the Des Moines River north of DM many years ago (before cell phones) with my young wife. We saw a carload of older teenage/young 20's kids in the parking lot, after having come out of the river on a float. One guy so wasted and passed out his friends were carrying him into their car. A gal was running the show and looking like she was ready to drive outta there. Got a half mile up the road and flagged a state trooper. He headed for the ramp and had all of them (maybe 6-7) up against the car in 5 minutes. Boat ramps are vacation spots.
