Was on the lake with a friend last week, and he was anxious to see how my Terrova worked, since he's getting a new boat. He was surprised that although the winds were only about 10 mph, the spot lock on the Terrova often let us drift 30 feet or more before returning us to the anchor point. I've never thought anything of it since that's how it's always worked, but he was very disappointed and wonders if something may be wrong with the unit. If not, he doesn't see it as being very useful for jig fishing.

How do your Terrova's perform?

I agree that they should be more accurate than they are but i think mine holds closer to about 15 ft. I'm happy with that.

Depends on the speed and variability of the wind. A strong wind, gusting and changing directions makes it worse. In calm or low-speed steady wind it's ~15 ft.

I agree, I wish it were better.

I have a Ulterra and 2nd time ever using it last weekend. 5-7mph wind moved 5 feet from lock point.

While I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this, it's still frustrating and disappointing, especially when trying to fish a break line or other structure. Guess a marker buoy and anchor are still essential equipment.

I would make sure it has the newest update installed, on a gusty day mine moves 15' a steady day is 8'ish and a calm day reaches out to 20 feet cause the #*^@ thing throttles up so hard it over shoots.

The owner's manual states that accuracy improves with GPS signal as well as battery charge. The spot lock on my powerdrive V2 seems to hold pretty decent, but i guess i've never really tried to put a number on how far it'll drift away before returning. I always seem to have full signal as well tho.

I have always owned MK. I hope they improve this before I buy my next one cause I hear the xi5 has a tighter anchor feature but prefer MK.

You can update an iPilot Link, but not an iPilot.

I wonder if satellite acquisition at different locations has a lot to do with it. On Monday I was out in three foot waves with winds over thirty, and the Terrova performed flawlessly. Still, the Humminbird GPS seems perfect regardless of location. Suppose its a matter of the same manufacturer, but different technology.

One thing that I noticed is that you should be completely stopped when you hit the anchor button if your moving even a little it won't hold as tight. And satellite accusation has a lot to do with it if you have a crappy satellite signal it will wander even more.

Not that I have one but...remember that GPS is accurate to about a 30 foot circumference form the point of your gps antenna. The newest systems have said within 5 feet, but I think that is more relegated to military technology.

Not anymore. They used to limit accuracy to non-military receivers but they stopped dithering the GPS signal in 2000; what they called "Selective Availability". http://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/modernization/sa/

The FAA collected data in early 2014 and it shows the horizontal accuracy of GPS SPS is often within ~1 m (with a good signal and good equipment): http://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/performance/accuracy/
