My best luck is obtained using twitch-Jerk baits for toothy critters. However I see lots of guys fish these baits very aggressively. Barely waiting for a pause between twitch-Jerk motions.
I on the other hand give the bait a twitch-twitch or Jerk-Jerk and then pause for a couple of seconds (in could weather for say 5 seconds or more). The fish nearly always hit on the pause meaning you really have to be on the ball and watch your line as well.
Fish with Triple-D's, Saltwater Rapala, Phantom's with curly tail, Suicks.
What works for you guys.

Cheers,
Muskers

I have two different techniques that work throughout the year but am curious to hear others thoughts.

I do either a very aggressive hard twitches or subtle smaller snaps. Both techniques I tend to use pauses and the length of the pause is varies but tends to be longer in cooler waters or cold front type conditions. The only time I stop pausing is if I am doing this hard twitching in the middle of summer or peak water temp seasons. I find more fish have come on the very hard twitches than the subtle technique and would agree more hits on the pause or you go to twitch and the fish is on.

Surprised we don't have more fishermen on the forum that are dedicated to Jerkbaits? I catch 90 % of my toothy critters on them.

New to it myself and have been investing more to it but I'm still learning and wish more people would just throw buck tails.

I use Phantom soft tails and Suicks maybe 50% of the time. My techniques are situational. I fish the new plastic suicks a little more aggressively and erratic. I still like the weighted wood suicks for slower applications with a lot of long pauses. In cold front and fall I fish larger phantoms real slow with long pauses. For a change of pace a combination approach works well for where I fish phantoms pretty fast and erratic but then pause for a long time.

Why do you want more people to throw bucktails??

Cause jerk baits are sweet if you have patience and your wrists hold up. Many people can't.

Ya I get tired wrist and shoulder, however I feel I can tease up more bites with Jerk-Twitch Baits than with throwing blades, plugs or trolling. I used to fish this way and then fished with a guy who used mainly Jerk-Twitch baits and he always out fished me, so I learned the technique. However we each have to unlock the code for ourselves.

I still must be missing something.

Why would you care what type of lure I (or other fishermen) am throwing?

I believe fish can be conditioned and the reasons why jerk baits work so well is its not seen every day

It is very similar to a pitbull sitting on a porch. If you walk steadily by him, he may get up, but normally wont chase you. Dart at him, pause, dart again, dart again and then pause for a while, you will normally initiate a chase and bite. Muskies are a lot like this with straight retrieve versus a jerk bait.

I usually fish a phantom like a WTD lure, do most of you fish it like a chop style jerk bait? Give Fat AZ a look, http://www.fatazmusky.com/

Jerkbaits/Twitchers are my "go to". It hard to beat a Suick for a jerkbait, Big Game crank or a Twisted Sucker glider. They will make fish move and/or eat for sure. On the Big Games...we typically straight crank the jointed models and jerk/twitch the straights...

I am good at getting fish located using jerks and gliders, but I sometimes struggle getting bites with them.

In going to dedicate most of my casting this season to a soft tail raptor from fat a.z. I have a couple gliders of theirs also!! Good products!! I have a perch and a show color white with orange belly the paint on them are second to none!

What size lure do you use in the spring when the water temp is in the 40's? And what do you use for a leader so the lure doesn't lose any action?

Hmmm.... Where might one get one of these "Twisted Suckers" You speak of?

In the spring with 40 degree temps I used a 4" phantom softail with success. They have a 6" solid leader that works well.

I'm trying to expand my selection of gliders. I have way too many phantoms. Is there a good one out there in more of a panfish shape? So a bit more vertical length to it vs long and skinny. I fish a lot of lakes with high panfish populations, so I think it would be worth trying something that's similar to that.

Yes the Swim and Jerk by Savage is actually a swimbait as is the 3d Shine and Glide from Savage. The larger variants of both these lures work well as twitch - jerk baits and are shaped like a perch or alewives. I don't hear much about them on the forum but they work for musky's. They are amongst my 5 go to baits.
