| After my daughter made a haul at the Wausau show with all the free musky lures she received. Especially the Tackle Ind. booth. Thank you very much. Your a great bunch of guys. I was wondering what u guys who have kids have them using as far as rod and reel set ups. |

| Kids sized musky TI rods are awesome. (Are they still made?) My kid got a 54 with one and it handled it great as well as a couple others. I had it paired with a toro winch 50. He was 10 at the time. I think the combo with using light lures gave him a good start. He now has an older 7'6" elite tech rod of mine with a NaCl 50hs. He still uses lighter lures but brings em in at a good clip with the hs. |

Location: Palatine, IL | Great question. I am putting together a setup for my 6 year old son. So far he will be using a Chronarch 200 I don't use. Not sure about the rod yet. I am interested to see what people suggest. |

Location: mercer wi | I bought my son a stcroix triumph 7' mh n paired it up with an old toro 50. Works great for him. Now has a stcroix premier 8 mh n citrix. Hasn't caught a musky yet but has a couple northern thst he's excited about n keeps him goin. Don't forget to bring a comfortable rod too in the boat. Spin caster with a rapala or mepps #4. If muskys suck, as they do sometimes, theres a stick to use for bass or northerns. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | All my grandkids start off w/ Zebco 33, then Currado 200's - set for minimal back lashes...6 is young but doable - I'd give her a short fast action bass rod w/ Currado & 50-65lb PowerPro..... and let the fun begin! Let her cast to a bucket off the boat in the drive way! Move the bucket around too! They have great fun doing it, and it develop's their casting skills- 2- kids, it gets competitive, better just one at a time- prize every time the dummy lure hits the bucket - (5 bucks for me) it gets them focused, they want Papa's money!
Yes- start with 6" or smaller stick bait/floater's, and small topwater baits..Make sure you're in area's where the tree cast's are minimal... Heddon Crazy Crawler's are great & they get bit (gey & white) the Mouse! or Froggy! Black & gold #10 & #11 Rapala's or 4' Zam's are pretty easy and catch lots of fish. A Nice whippy rod like Ugly Stick loads up good and lets them cast farther, and won't break the bank if it goes overboard either, it also helps in the battle as its more forgiving. Set the drag for them and warn them not to touch it!

| those are some awesome pics man. My 7yr old daughter is going to start casting with me this year. Shes been a perch and smallie fisherman with me for a few now, I got her a stradic 4000 to learn with. It really is amazing how fast kids learn. |

So is this thread going to get as stupid as the "Dream Musky Water thread", SLED..? Why are you being such a "tool"?
We do pretty good on all species we target... I've taught them all the importance of catch & release too. Its a wonderful thing when they remind you too. Jazzy (Girl who laughs at 50's) lost a real Canadian record walleye on Dogtooth because I missed it with the net TWICE, net bag hooked on boat cleat twice. She did everything right, I told her to let it go away from the boat and then I said to bring it back. After it shook the hooks (barbless), I told her I was so so sorry that she lost it because of my failure as netman.. Her response -. "That's OK Papa, we were just going to let it go anyway!" She doesn't know the truth, that its probably the one big walleye she could and should have kept. Although, I would have let her make that decision too.
I love seeing kids at the fishing shows and out fishing. It means they are having fun and enjoying nature..
You seem to have a problem, you're feeding the wrong wolf. Try feeding the right one, please start by answering the original question.

Just make sure you have camera for those special moments....smart cell phones are a wonderfull thing...

| Back on topic:
I started my kids out on "Danny The Dinosaur" and "Barbie" so they could learn the fundimentals of casting/fishing at about 4 years old. When they progressed past that, I got them Abu Garcia Black Max combos for learning baitcasting reels for small pike/bass.
On the Muskie end of things, I started them out with one of the 6' Tackle Industries kid's rods with an Abu C4. Both my son and daughter progressed past that setup in less than a month and moved up to 9' Rods with a NACL (son) and a Calcutta B (Daughter).
Both kids (13 and 15) can now fish an 8 hour day with a guide no problems. My son loses interest if we aren't moving fish, but my daughter will grind all day.
Seems like a common thread girls vs. boys with the focus and determination, girls seem to take it as a challenge and gut it out at that age.
My best advice: Have fun with it when out with the kids. I don't think I caught a bluegill personally until my kids were over 9, too much running back and forth and helping out: Baiting, Unhooking, untangling, climbing trees after lures, etc. but having them in the boat now makes it all worth it.

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | What Randal said: There is no bad time fishing w/kids..its crazy fun just watching them...I've also gotten: "Papa when are you going to catch a fish?" - "I have to drive the boat!" - they are my crew, they know how to set the boards out and they love it. I catch fish when we stop to cast..LOL, I started them with cane pole's for blue gills & white bass - yup no time to fish myself, just remove fish & bait hooks...they are a quick study, and catch on pretty fast..he's also right the girls are hard core....they will hang all day long...teach them to swim. They have permission to jump in anytime except when the boat is moving...I put them on little islands with their lunch & let them explore fishing & wading the shoreline too..
No- I don't just leave them, I'm always within a safe shouting distance too...and I'm always within sight.. They all have graduated to using Papa's gear and lures, now..I've got another little 6 year old Cortanie (Britanie's half sister - Britanie didn't want to be a half, she told her mom she was moving in w/Nana & Papa!) Thats Brit snoozing on the rear deck of ESOX Mainiac after a very early morning beast hunt..in Canada. Cortanie told me she likes fishing and that she's only been watching her dad fish, though. I think its time to let her fish too. 2016 will be Cortanie's year to spend some time fishing w/Papa - I'll have dust off the cane poles....4 years from now she'll get to go to Canada with me, if the Lord Bless's me with the time.
There's only one wrong way - Don't put a fishing pole in their hands and let them catch fish! I want to see your daughter's first fish moments of all species..especially the first monsters! They have their own definition of "monster" and it grows as they grow. Barbie poles can put big fish in the boat too..including muskies - ask Chris from Hayward Performance Tackle about Charlie's muskie? A great moment he will always remember!
